A Prophecy Against Babylon

1 A prophecy1 concerning Babylon2 that Isaiah son of Amoz3 saw:4 2 Raise a banner5 on a bare hilltop, shout to them; beckon to them to enter the gates6 of the nobles. 3 I have commanded my holy ones; I have summoned my warriors7 to carry out my wrath8-- those who rejoice9 in my triumph. 4 Listen, a noise on the mountains, like that of a great multitude!10 Listen, an uproar11 among the kingdoms, like nations massing together! The LORD Almighty12 is mustering13 an army for war. 5 They come from faraway lands, from the ends of the heavens14-- the LORD and the weapons15 of his wrath16-- to destroy17 the whole country. 6 Wail,18 for the day19 of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction20 from the Almighty.a21 7 Because of this, all hands will go limp,22 every man's heart will melt.23 8 Terror24 will seize them, pain and anguish will grip25 them; they will writhe like a woman in labor.26 They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.27 9 See, the day28 of the LORD is coming --a cruel29 day, with wrath30 and fierce anger31-- to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it. 10 The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light.32 The rising sun33 will be darkened34 and the moon will not give its light.35 11 I will punish36 the world for its evil, the wicked37 for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty38 and will humble39 the pride of the ruthless.40 12 I will make people41 scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir.42 13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;43 and the earth will shake44 from its place at the wrath45 of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger.46 14 Like a hunted47 gazelle, like sheep without a shepherd,48 they will all return to their own people, they will flee49 to their native land.50 15 Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall51 by the sword.52 16 Their infants53 will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished.54 17 See, I will stir up55 against them the Medes,56 who do not care for silver and have no delight in gold.57 18 Their bows58 will strike down the young men;59 they will have no mercy60 on infants, nor will they look with compassion on children.61 19 Babylon,62 the jewel of kingdoms,63 the pride and glory64 of the Babylonians,b will be overthrown65 by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.66 20 She will never be inhabited67 or lived in through all generations; there no nomads68 will pitch their tents, there no shepherds will rest their flocks. 21 But desert creatures69 will lie there, jackals70 will fill her houses; there the owls71 will dwell, and there the wild goats72 will leap about. 22 Hyenas73 will inhabit her strongholds,74 jackals75 her luxurious palaces. Her time is at hand,76 and her days will not be prolonged.77
