A prophecy1 concerning Egypt:23 See, the LORD rides on a swift cloud4 and is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before him, and the hearts of the Egyptians melt5 within them.
"I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian-- brother will fight against brother,6 neighbor against neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom.73
The Egyptians will lose heart,8 and I will bring their plans9 to nothing;10 they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists.114
I will hand the Egyptians over to the power of a cruel master, and a fierce king12 will rule over them," declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty.
The waters of the river will dry up,13 and the riverbed will be parched and dry.146
The canals will stink;15 the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up.16 The reeds17 and rushes will wither,187
also the plants19 along the Nile, at the mouth of the river. Every sown field20 along the Nile will become parched, will blow away and be no more.218
Those who fish22 will groan and lament, all who cast hooks23 into the Nile; those who throw nets on the water will pine away.
Those who work with combed flax24 will despair, the weavers of fine linen25 will lose hope.
The workers in cloth will be dejected, and all the wage earners will be sick at heart.
The officials of Zoan26 are nothing but fools; the wise counselors27 of Pharaoh give senseless advice.28 How can you say to Pharaoh, "I am one of the wise men,29 a disciple of the ancient kings"?
Where are your wise men30 now? Let them show you and make known what the LORD Almighty has planned31 against Egypt.
The officials of Zoan32 have become fools, the leaders of Memphis33 are deceived; the cornerstones34 of her peoples have led Egypt astray.
The LORD has poured into them a spirit of dizziness;35 they make Egypt stagger in all that she does, as drunkards stagger36 around in their vomit.
There is nothing Egypt can do-- head or tail, palm branch or reed.3716
In that day38 the Egyptians will become weaklings.39 They will shudder with fear40 at the uplifted hand41 that the LORD Almighty raises against them.
And the land of Judah will bring terror to the Egyptians; everyone to whom Judah is mentioned will be terrified,42 because of what the LORD Almighty is planning43 against them.
In that day44 five cities45 in Egypt will speak the language of Canaan and swear allegiance46 to the LORD Almighty. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.a4719
In that day48 there will be an altar49 to the LORD in the heart of Egypt,50 and a monument51 to the LORD at its border.
It will be a sign and witness52 to the LORD Almighty in the land of Egypt. When they cry out to the LORD because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior53 and defender, and he will rescue54 them.
So the LORD will make himself known to the Egyptians, and in that day they will acknowledge55 the LORD. They will worship56 with sacrifices and grain offerings; they will make vows to the LORD and keep them.5722
The LORD will strike58 Egypt with a plague;59 he will strike them and heal them. They will turn60 to the LORD, and he will respond to their pleas and heal61 them.
In that day62 there will be a highway63 from Egypt to Assyria.64 The Assyrians will go to Egypt and the Egyptians to Assyria. The Egyptians and Assyrians will worship65 together.
In that day66 Israel will be the third, along with Egypt and Assyria,67 a blessingb68 on the earth.
The LORD Almighty will bless69 them, saying, "Blessed be Egypt my people,70 Assyria my handiwork,71 and Israel my inheritance.72"
