"Here is my servant,1 whom I uphold, my chosen one2 in whom I delight;3 I will put my Spirit4 on him, and he will bring justice5 to the nations.62
He will not shout or cry out,7 or raise his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed8 he will not break,9 and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.10 In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;114
he will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice12 on earth. In his teaching13 the islands14 will put their hope."155
This is what God the LORD says-- he who created the heavens16 and stretched them out, who spread out the earth17 with all that springs from it,18 who gives breath19 to its people, and life to those who walk on it:
"I, the LORD, have called20 you in righteousness;21 I will take hold of your hand.22 I will keep23 you and will make you to be a covenant24 for the people and a light25 for the Gentiles,267
to open eyes that are blind,27 to free28 captives from prison29 and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.308
"I am the LORD;31 that is my name!32 I will not yield my glory to another33 or my praise to idols.349
See, the former things35 have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce36 them to you."
Sing37 to the LORD a new song,38 his praise39 from the ends of the earth,40 you who go down to the sea, and all that is in it,41 you islands,42 and all who live in them.
Let the wilderness43 and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where Kedar44 lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela45 sing for joy; let them shout from the mountaintops.4612
Let them give glory47 to the LORD and proclaim his praise48 in the islands.4913
The LORD will march out like a champion,50 like a warrior51 he will stir up his zeal;52 with a shout53 he will raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies.5414
"For a long time I have kept silent,55 I have been quiet and held myself back.56 But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant.5715
I will lay waste58 the mountains59 and hills and dry up all their vegetation; I will turn rivers into islands and dry up60 the pools.
I will lead61 the blind62 by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light63 before them and make the rough places smooth.64 These are the things I will do; I will not forsake65 them.
But those who trust in idols, who say to images, 'You are our gods,'66 will be turned back in utter shame.67
"Hear, you deaf;68 look, you blind, and see!
Who is blind69 but my servant,70 and deaf like the messenger71 I send? Who is blind like the one in covenant72 with me, blind like the servant of the LORD?
You have seen many things, but have paid no attention; your ears are open, but you hear nothing."7321
It pleased the LORD for the sake74 of his righteousness to make his law75 great and glorious.
But this is a people plundered76 and looted, all of them trapped in pits77 or hidden away in prisons.78 They have become plunder, with no one to rescue them;79 they have been made loot, with no one to say, "Send them back."
Which of you will listen to this or pay close attention80 in time to come?
Who handed Jacob over to become loot, and Israel to the plunderers?81 Was it not the LORD,82 against whom we have sinned? For they would not follow83 his ways; they did not obey his law.8425
So he poured out on them his burning anger,85 the violence of war. It enveloped them in flames,86 yet they did not understand;87 it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.88
