Has not my hand made all these things,4 and so they came into being?" declares the LORD. "These are the ones I look on with favor: those who are humble and contrite in spirit,5 and who tremble at my word.6
But whoever sacrifices a bull7 is like one who kills a human being, and whoever offers a lamb is like one who breaks a dog's neck; whoever makes a grain offering is like one who presents pig's8 blood, and whoever burns memorial incense9 is like one who worships an idol. They have chosen their own ways,10 and they delight in their abominations;11
so I also will choose harsh treatment for them and will bring on them what they dread.12 For when I called, no one answered,13 when I spoke, no one listened. They did evil14 in my sight and chose what displeases me."15
Hear the word of the LORD, you who tremble at his word:16 "Your own people who hate17 you, and exclude you because of my name, have said, 'Let the LORD be glorified, that we may see your joy!' Yet they will be put to shame.18
Who has ever heard of such things? Who has ever seen23 things like this? Can a country be born in a day24 or a nation be brought forth in a moment? Yet no sooner is Zion in labor than she gives birth to her children.25
For this is what the LORD says: "I will extend peace33 to her like a river,34 and the wealth35 of nations like a flooding stream; you will nurse and be carried36 on her arm and dandled on her knees.
"Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens,52 following one who is among those who eat the flesh of pigs,53 rats54 and other unclean things--they will meet their end55 together with the one they follow," declares the LORD.
The meaning of the Hebrew for this clause is uncertain.
"I will set a sign59 among them, and I will send some of those who survive60 to the nations--to Tarshish,61 to the Libyansb and Lydians62 (famous as archers), to Tubal63 and Greece,64 and to the distant islands65 that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory.66 They will proclaim my glory among the nations.
Some Septuagint manuscripts "Put" (Libyans); Hebrew "Pul"
And they will bring67 all your people, from all the nations, to my holy mountain68 in Jerusalem as an offering to the LORD--on horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels,"69 says the LORD. "They will bring them, as the Israelites bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the LORD in ceremonially clean vessels.70
"And they will go out and look on the dead bodies76 of those who rebelled77 against me; their worm78 will not die, nor will their fire be quenched,79 and they will be loathsome to the whole human race."
