Isaiah 9 (Today's New International Version)

View In My Bible
1 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom1 for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,2 but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan-- 2 The people walking in darkness3 have seen a great light;4 on those living in the land of deep darkness5 a light has dawned.6 3 You have enlarged the nation7 and increased their joy;8 they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as soldiers rejoice when dividing the plunder.9 4 For as in the day of Midian's defeat,10 you have shattered11 the yoke12 that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders,13 the rod of their oppressor.14 5 Every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning,15 will be fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born,16 to us a son is given,17 and the government18 will be on his shoulders.19 And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,20 Mighty God,21 Everlasting22 Father,23 Prince of Peace.24 7 Of the increase of his government25 and peace26 there will be no end.27 He will reign28 on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice29 and righteousness30 from that time on and forever.31 The zeal32 of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

The LORD's Anger Against Israel

8 The Lord has sent a message33 against Jacob; it will fall on Israel. 9 All the people will know it-- Ephraim34 and the inhabitants of Samaria35-- who say with pride and arrogance36 of heart, 10 "The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone;37 the fig38 trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.39" 11 But the LORD has strengthened Rezin's40 foes against them and has spurred their enemies on. 12 Arameans41 from the east and Philistines42 from the west have devoured43 Israel with open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger44 is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.45 13 But the people have not returned46 to him who struck47 them, nor have they sought48 the LORD Almighty. 14 So the LORD will cut off from Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and reed49 in a single day;50 15 the elders51 and dignitaries52 are the head, the prophets53 who teach lies54 are the tail. 16 Those who guide55 this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray.56 17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,57 nor will he pity58 the fatherless and widows, for everyone is ungodly59 and wicked,60 every mouth speaks folly.61 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.62 18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire;63 it consumes briers and thorns,64 it sets the forest thickets ablaze,65 so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke. 19 By the wrath66 of the LORD Almighty the land will be scorched67 and the people will be fuel for the fire;68 they will not spare each other.69 20 On the right they will devour, but still be hungry;70 on the left they will eat,71 but not be satisfied. They will all feed on the flesh of their own offspringa: 21 Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;72 together they will turn against Judah.73 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.74
