All was well with me, but he shattered me; he seized me by the neck and crushed me.1 He has made me his target;2
his archers surround me.3 Without pity, he pierces4 my kidneys and spills my gall on the ground.
Again and again5 he bursts upon me; he rushes at me like a warrior.6
"I have sewed sackcloth7 over my skin and buried my brow in the dust.8
My face is red with weeping,9 dark shadows ring my eyes;10
yet my hands have been free of violence11 and my prayer is pure.12
"Earth, do not cover my blood;13 may my cry14 never be laid to rest!15
Even now my witness16 is in heaven;17 my advocate is on high.18
My intercessor19 is my friend20 as my eyes pour out21 tears22 to God;
on behalf of a human being he pleads23 with God as one pleads for a friend.
"Only a few years will pass before I take the path of no return.24
