1 I am one who has seen affliction1 by the rod of the LORD's wrath.2

18 So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD."30

      19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness31 and the gall.32

          20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast33 within me.34

          21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:
          22 Because of the LORD's great love35 we are not consumed,36 for his compassions never fail.37

          23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.38

          24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion;39 therefore I will wait for him."

          27 It is good for people to bear the yoke while they are young.
          28 Let them sit alone in silence,43 for the LORD has laid it on them.

          39 Why should the living complain when punished for their sins?55

          40 Let us examine our ways and test them,56 and let us return to the LORD.57

          41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven,58 and say:
