Lamentations 5 (Today's New International Version)

View In My Bible
1 Remember, LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace.1 2 Our inheritance2 has been turned over to strangers,3 our homes4 to foreigners.5 3 We have become fatherless, our mothers are widows.6 4 We must buy the water we drink;7 our wood can be had only at a price.8 5 Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary9 and find no rest.10 6 We submitted to Egypt and Assyria11 to get enough bread. 7 Our parents12 sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment.13 8 Slaves14 rule over us, and there is none to free us from their hands.15 9 We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert. 10 Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger.16 11 Women have been ravished17 in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah. 12 Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders18 are shown no respect.19 13 Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood. 14 The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music.20 15 Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning.21 16 The crown22 has fallen from our head.23 Woe to us, for we have sinned!24 17 Because of this our hearts25 are faint,26 because of these things our eyes27 grow dim28 18 for Mount Zion,29 which lies desolate,30 with jackals prowling over it. 19 You, LORD, reign forever;31 your throne endures32 from generation to generation. 20 Why do you always forget us?33 Why do you forsake34 us so long? 21 Restore35 us to yourself, LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old 22 unless you have utterly rejected us36 and are angry with us beyond measure.37
