A prophecy1 concerning Nineveh.2 The book of the vision3 of Nahum the Elkoshite.
The LORD is a jealous4 and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance5 and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and vents his wrath against his enemies.6
The LORD is slow to anger7 but great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished.8 His way is in the whirlwind9 and the storm,10 and clouds11 are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes12 the sea and dries it up;13 he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel14 wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade.
The mountains quake15 before him and the hills melt away.16 The earth trembles17 at his presence, the world and all who live in it.18
Who can withstand19 his indignation? Who can endure20 his fierce anger?21 His wrath is poured out like fire;22 the rocks are shattered23 before him.
The LORD is good,24 a refuge in times of trouble.25 He cares for26 those who trust in him,27
but with an overwhelming flood28 he will make an end of Nineveh; he will pursue his foes into darkness.
Whatever they plot29 against the LORD he will bring to an end; trouble will not come a second time.
They will be entangled among thorns30 and drunk31 from their wine; they will be consumed like dry stubble.32
