In the fourth year of King Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah1 on the fourth day of the ninth month, the month of Kislev.22
The people of Bethel had sent Sharezer and Regem-Melek, together with their men, to entreat3 the LORD43
by asking the priests of the house of the LORD Almighty and the prophets, "Should I mourn5 and fast in the fifth6 month, as I have done for so many years?"
Then the word of the LORD Almighty came to me:
"Ask all the people of the land and the priests, 'When you fasted7 and mourned in the fifth and seventh8 months for the past seventy years,9 was it really for me that you fasted?
And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves?107
Are these not the words the LORD proclaimed through the earlier prophets11 when Jerusalem and its surrounding towns were at rest12 and prosperous, and the Negev and the western foothills13 were settled?' "148
And the word of the LORD came again to Zechariah:
"This is what the LORD Almighty said: 'Administer true justice;15 show mercy and compassion to one another.1610
Do not oppress the widow17 or the fatherless, the foreigner18 or the poor.19 Do not plot evil against each other.'2011
"But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly21 they turned their backs22 and covered their ears.2312
They made their hearts as hard as flint24 and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets.25 So the LORD Almighty was very angry.2613
" 'When I called, they did not listen;27 so when they called, I would not listen,'28 says the LORD Almighty.2914
'I scattered30 them with a whirlwind31 among all the nations, where they were strangers. The land they left behind them was so desolate that no one traveled through it.32 This is how they made the pleasant land desolate.33' "
