He will stretch out his hand against the north and destroy Assyria,1 leaving Nineveh2 utterly desolate and dry as the desert.314
Flocks and herds4 will lie down there, creatures of every kind. The desert owl5 and the screech owl67 will roost on her columns. Their calls will echo through the windows, rubble will be in the doorways, the beams of cedar will be exposed.
This is the carefree8 city that lived in safety.9 She said to herself, "I am, and there is none besides me."10 What a ruin she has become, a lair for wild beasts!11 All who pass by her scoff12 and shake their fists.13
