John 1:7-17

7 He came as a ¹witness, to bear witness about the light, ²that all might believe through him.

8 ³He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

9 ⁴The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet ⁵the world did not know him.

11 He came to ⁶his own, ^[a] and ⁷his own people^{[b] 8}did not receive him.

12 But to all who did receive him, ⁹who believed in his name, ¹⁰he gave the right ¹¹to become ¹²children of God,

13 who ¹³were born, ¹⁴not of blood ¹⁵nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And ¹⁶the Word ¹⁷became flesh and ¹⁸dwelt among us, ¹⁹and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of ²⁰grace and ²¹truth.

15 ( ²²John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ²³‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. ’”)

16 For from ²⁴his fullness we have all received, ²⁵grace upon grace. ^[c]

17 For ²⁶the law was given through Moses; ²⁷grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
