The LORDsaid to Moses: "Tell your brotherAaron that he shall not enter at anytime into the holy place inside* the veil,before* the mercyseatwhich is on the ark,or he will die; for I will appear in the cloudover the mercyseat.

"He shall put on the holylinentunic, and the linenundergarments shall be next to his body, and he shall be girded with the linensash and attired with the linenturban (these are holygarments ). Then he shall bathe his body in water and put them on.

"But the goat on which the lot for the scapegoatfell shall be presentedalivebefore the LORD, to makeatonement upon it, to send it into the wilderness as the scapegoat.

"Then Aaron shall offer the bull of the sinofferingwhich is for himself and makeatonement for himself and for his household, and he shall slaughter the bull of the sinofferingwhich is for himself.

"He shall take a firepanfull of coals of fire from upon the altarbefore* the LORD and two handfuls* of finelygroundsweetincense, and bring it inside* the veil.

"He shall put the incense on the firebefore the LORD, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercyseat that is on the ark of the testimony, otherwise he will die.

"Moreover, he shall takesome of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercyseat on the east side; also in front of the mercyseat he shall sprinklesome of the blood with his fingerseventimes.

"Then he shall slaughter the goat of the sinofferingwhich is for the people, and bring its bloodinside** the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercyseat and in front of the mercyseat.

"He shall makeatonement for the holy place, because of the impurities of the sons of Israel and because of their transgressions in regard to all their sins; and thus he shall do for the tent of meeting which abides with them in the midst of their impurities.

"When he goes in to makeatonement in the holy place, noone shall be in the tent of meetinguntil he comes out, that he may makeatonement for himself and for his household and for all the assembly of Israel.

"Then he shall go out to the altar that is before the LORD and makeatonement for it, and shall takesome of the blood of the bull and of the blood of the goat and put it on the horns of the altar on allsides.

"Then Aaron shall layboth of his hands on the head of the livegoat, and confessover it all the iniquities of the sons of Israel and all their transgressions in regard to all their sins; and he shall lay them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who stands in readiness.

"Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting and takeoff the linengarmentswhich he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there.

"He shall bathe his body with water in a holyplace and put on his clothes, and comeforth and offer his burntoffering and the burntoffering of the people and makeatonement for himself and for the people.

"But the bull of the sinoffering and the goat of the sinoffering, whoseblood was brought in to makeatonement in the holy place, shall be takenoutside** the camp, and they shall burn their hides, their flesh, and their refuse in the fire.

"This shall be a permanentstatute for you: in the seventhmonth, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble your souls and not doanywork, whether the native, or the alien who sojournsamong you;

"So the priestwho is anointed and ordained* to serve as priest in his father'splace shall makeatonement: he shall thus put on the linengarments, the holygarments,

and makeatonement for the holysanctuary, and he shall makeatonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar. He shall also makeatonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.

"Now you shall havethis as a permanentstatute, to makeatonement for the sons of Israel for all their sinsonce every year." And just as the LORD had commandedMoses, so he did.
