John 1:5-15

5 ¹The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not ^[a]comprehend it.

The Witness John

6 There ^[b]came a man sent from God, whose name was ²John.

7 ^[c]He came ^[d]3as a witness, to testify about the Light, ⁴so that all might believe through him.

8 ^[e]5He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

9 There was ⁶the true Light ^[f]which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.

10 He was in the world, and ⁷the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

11 He came to His ^[g]own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.

12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become ⁸children of God, even ⁹to those who believe in His name,

13 ¹⁰who were ^[h]born, not of ^[i]blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

The Word Made Flesh

14 And ¹¹the Word ¹²became flesh, and ^[j]13dwelt among us, and ¹⁴we saw His glory, glory as of ^[k]the only begotten from the Father, full of ¹⁵grace and ¹⁶truth.

15 John ¹⁷testified about Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, '¹⁸He who comes after me ^[l]has a higher rank than I, ¹⁹for He existed before me.' "
