Young's Literal Translation
For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ."
They asked him, and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"
He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah " (which translated means Christ ).
"You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but, 'I have been sent ahead of Him.'
The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us."
"Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?"
"Look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. The rulers do not really know that this is the Christ, do they?
"However, we know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ may come, no one knows where He is from."
But many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, "When the Christ comes, He will not perform more signs than those which this man has, will He?"
Others were saying, "This is the Christ." Still others were saying, "Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He?
"Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone confessed Him to be Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue.
The Jews then gathered around Him, and were saying to Him, "How long will You keep us in suspense ? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly."
She said to Him, "Yes, Lord ; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world."
The crowd then answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how can You say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man?"
"This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
