Isaías 14:4-23

4 te mofarás del rey de Babilonia y dirás:
«El hombre poderoso ha sido destruido.
Sí, se acabó tu insolencia.

5 Pues el Señor
aplastó tu poder malvado
y puso fin a tu reino perverso.

6 Atacabas al pueblo con incesantes golpes de furia
y dominabas a las naciones dentro de tu poder sofocante
con una tiranía implacable.

7 Sin embargo, finalmente la tierra está en reposo y tranquila.
¡Ahora puede volver a cantar!

8 Hasta los árboles del bosque
—los cipreses y los cedros del Líbano—
cantan esta alegre canción:
“¡Dado que te talaron,
nadie vendrá ahora para talarnos a nosotros!”.

9 »En el lugar de los muertos
hay mucha emoción
por tu llegada.
Los espíritus de los líderes mundiales y de los reyes poderosos que murieron hace tiempo
se ponen de pie para verte llegar.

10 Todos exclaman a una voz:
“¡Ahora eres tan débil como nosotros!

11 Tu poder y tu fuerza fueron enterrados contigo.
En tu palacio ha cesado el sonido del arpa.
Ahora los gusanos son tu sábana
y las lombrices, tu manta”.

12 »¡Cómo has caído del cielo,
oh estrella luciente, hijo de la mañana!
Has sido arrojado a la tierra,
tú que destruías a las naciones del mundo.

13 Pues te decías a ti mismo:
“Subiré al cielo para poner mi trono por encima de las estrellas de Dios.
Voy a presidir en el monte de los dioses,
muy lejos en el norte.

14 Escalaré hasta los cielos más altos
y seré como el Altísimo”.

15 En cambio, serás bajado al lugar de los muertos,
a las profundidades más hondas.

16 Allí todos te mirarán y se preguntarán:
“¿Puede ser este el que sacudía la tierra
y hacía temblar a los reinos del mundo?

17 ¿Es este el que destruyó el mundo
y lo convirtió en una tierra baldía?
¿Es este el rey que demolía las grandes ciudades del mundo
y no tenía compasión de sus prisioneros?”.

18 »Los reyes de las naciones yacen en gloria majestuosa,
cada cual en su propia tumba,

19 pero tú serás sacado de tu sepultura
como una rama inútil.
Como un cadáver pisoteado bajo los pies,
serás arrojado a una fosa común
con los que murieron en batalla.
Descenderás al abismo.

20 No te darán un entierro apropiado,
porque destruiste a tu nación
y masacraste a tu pueblo.
Los descendientes de una persona tan malvada
nunca más recibirán honra.

21 ¡Maten a los hijos de este hombre!
¡Que mueran por los pecados de su padre!
Que no se levanten para conquistar la tierra,
y llenar el mundo con sus ciudades».

22 Esto dice el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales:
«¡Yo, yo mismo me he levantado contra Babilonia!
Destruiré a sus hijos, y a los hijos de sus hijos
—dice el Señor
—.

23 Convertiré a Babilonia en un lugar desolado, tierra de búhos,
lleno de pantanos y de ciénagas;
barreré la tierra con la escoba de la destrucción.
¡Yo, el Señor
de los Ejércitos Celestiales, he hablado!».

Isaías 14:4-23 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO ISAIAH 14

This chapter contains prophecies of the restoration of the Jews, of the fall of the king of Babylon, and the destruction of the Assyrian empire, and of the ruin of Palestine. The moving cause of the restoration of the Jews, and their settlement in their own land, is the distinguishing mercy of God towards them; the accomplishment of it, proselytes joined unto them; the means, people of other nations, who should bring them into it, and whom they should possess and rule over; and the consequence of it, rest from sorrow, fear, and hard bondage, Isa 14:1-3 upon which they are introduced as taking up a proverb, or a triumphant song, concerning the king of Babylon, wondering at his fall, and ascribing it to the Lord, Isa 14:4,5 representing the inhabitants of the earth, and great men of it, as at peace, and rest, and rejoicing, who before were continually disturbed, and smitten by him, Isa 14:6-8 introducing the dead, and those in hell, meeting him, and welcoming him into their regions, with taunts and jeers; upbraiding him with his weakness, shame, and disgrace he was come into; putting him in mind of his former pomp and splendour, pride, arrogance, and haughtiness, Isa 14:9-15 spectators are brought in, as amazed at the low, mean, and despicable condition he was brought into, considering what he had done in the world, in kingdoms and cities, but was now denied a burial, when other kings lay in their pompous sepulchres, Isa 14:16-20 and then it is foretold that that whole royal family should be cut off, and Babylon, the metropolis of his kingdom, should be utterly destroyed, Isa 14:21-23 all which was settled and fixed by the purpose of God, which could not be made void, Isa 14:24-27 and next follows a prophecy of the destruction of Palestine; the date of the prophecy is given Isa 14:28 the inhabitants of Palestine are bid not to rejoice at the death of one of the kings of Judah, since another should arise, who would be fatal to them, Isa 14:29 and while the Jews would be in safety, they would be destroyed by famine and war, Isa 14:30,31 from all which it would appear, and it might be told the messengers of the nations, or any inquiring persons, that Zion is of the Lord's founding, and under his care and protection, and that his people have great reason and encouragement to trust in him, Isa 14:32.
