1 Chronicles 10

LEB 1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and every Israelite fled away from before the Philistines. And they fell slain upon Mount Gilboa. NIV 1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. LEB 2 And the Philistines {overtook} Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua, the sons of Saul. NIV 2 The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua. LEB 3 And the battle was heavy against Saul, and the {archers} found him, and he was wounded by the {archers}. NIV 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him. LEB 4 And Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and deal harshly with me." But he was very afraid. Then Saul took the sword and fell upon it. NIV 4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and abuse me.” But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. LEB 5 When his armor-bearer saw that Saul [was] dead, he also fell upon the sword, and he died. NIV 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died. LEB 6 So Saul died. And his three sons and all his house died together. NIV 6 So Saul and his three sons died, and all his house died together. LEB 7 And when all the men of Israel who [were] in the valley saw that they had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. Then the Philistines came and dwelled in them. NIV 7 When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them. LEB 8 And it happened [that] on the next day when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. NIV 8 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. LEB 9 And they stripped him and took his head and his weapons, and they sent [them] throughout the land of the Philistines to bring news to their idols and the nation. NIV 9 They stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news among their idols and their people. LEB 10 And they put his weapons in the temple of their gods, and they fastened his skull to the temple of Dagon. NIV 10 They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung up his head in the temple of Dagon. LEB 11 When all Jabesh-Gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, NIV 11 When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, LEB 12 every strong man arose and took the dead body of Saul and the dead bodies of his sons and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days. NIV 12 all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. Then they buried their bones under the great tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days. LEB 13 So Saul died on account of his sin which he had sinned against Yahweh concerning the command of Yahweh that he did not keep. He also consulted a medium to seek [guidance]. NIV 13 Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, LEB 14 But he did not seek Yahweh. So Yahweh put him to death and turned over the kingship to David, the son of Jesse. NIV 14 and did not inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.
