NRSA 1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, NIV 1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, NRSA 2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: NIV 2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours: NRSA 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. NRSA 4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, NIV 4 I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. NRSA 5 for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind— NIV 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge— NRSA 6 just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you— NIV 6 God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. NRSA 7 so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. NRSA 8 He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. NIV 8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. NRSA 9 God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. NIV 9 God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. NRSA 10 Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. NIV 10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. NRSA 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. NIV 11 My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. NRSA 12 What I mean is that each of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." NIV 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas ”; still another, “I follow Christ.” NRSA 13 Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? NIV 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? NRSA 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, NIV 14 I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, NRSA 15 so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. NIV 15 so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. NRSA 16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) NIV 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) NRSA 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. NIV 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. NRSA 18 For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. NIV 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. NRSA 19 For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart." NIV 19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” NRSA 20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? NIV 20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? NRSA 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. NIV 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. NRSA 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, NIV 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, NRSA 23 but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, NIV 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, NRSA 24 but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. NIV 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. NRSA 25 For God's foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God's weakness is stronger than human strength. NIV 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. NRSA 26 Consider your own call, brothers and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. NIV 26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. NRSA 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; NIV 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. NRSA 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, NIV 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, NRSA 29 so that no one might boast in the presence of God. NIV 29 so that no one may boast before him. NRSA 30 He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, NIV 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. NRSA 31 in order that, as it is written, "Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord." NIV 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
