1 Corinthians 11

GW 1 Imitate me as I imitate Christ. NIV 1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. GW 2 I praise you for always thinking about me and for carefully following the traditions that I handed down to you. NIV 2 I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. GW 3 However, I want you to realize that Christ has authority over every man, a husband has authority over his wife, and God has authority over Christ. NIV 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. GW 4 Every man who covers his head when he prays or speaks what God has revealed dishonors the one who has authority over him. NIV 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. GW 5 Every woman who prays or speaks what God has revealed and has her head uncovered while she speaks dishonors the one who has authority over her. She is like the woman who has her head shaved. NIV 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. GW 6 So if a woman doesn't cover her head, she should cut off her hair. If it's a disgrace for a woman to cut off her hair or shave her head, she should cover her head. NIV 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head. GW 7 A man should not cover his head. He is God's image and glory. The woman, however, is man's glory. NIV 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. GW 8 Clearly, man wasn't made from woman but woman from man. NIV 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; GW 9 Man wasn't created for woman but woman for man. NIV 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. GW 10 Therefore, a woman should wear something on her head to show she is under [someone's] authority, out of respect for the angels. NIV 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. GW 11 Yet, as believers in the Lord, women couldn't exist without men and men couldn't exist without women. NIV 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. GW 12 As a woman came into existence from a man, so men come into existence by women, but everything comes from God. NIV 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. GW 13 Judge your own situation. Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? NIV 13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? GW 14 Doesn't nature itself teach you that it is disgraceful for a man to have long hair? NIV 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, GW 15 Doesn't it teach you that it is a woman's pride to wear her hair long? Her hair is given to her in place of a covering. NIV 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. GW 16 If anyone wants to argue about this [they can't, because] we don't have any custom like this--nor do any of the churches of God. NIV 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. GW 17 I have no praise for you as I instruct you in the following matter: When you gather, it results in more harm than good. NIV 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. GW 18 In the first place, I hear that when you gather as a church you split up into opposing groups. I believe some of what I hear. NIV 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. GW 19 Factions have to exist in order to make it clear who the genuine believers among you are. NIV 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. GW 20 When you gather in the same place, you can't possibly be eating the Lord's Supper. NIV 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, GW 21 Each of you eats his own supper [without waiting for each other]. So one person goes hungry and another gets drunk. NIV 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. GW 22 Don't you have homes in which to eat and drink? Do you despise God's church and embarrass people who don't have anything to eat? What can I say to you? Should I praise you? I won't praise you for this. NIV 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter! GW 23 After all, I passed on to you what I had received from the Lord. On the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread NIV 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, GW 24 and spoke a prayer of thanksgiving. He broke the bread and said, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me." NIV 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” GW 25 When supper was over, he did the same with the cup. He said, "This cup is the new promise made with my blood. Every time you drink from it, do it to remember me." NIV 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” GW 26 Every time you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you tell about the Lord's death until he comes. NIV 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. GW 27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks from the Lord's cup in an improper way will be held responsible for the Lord's body and blood. NIV 27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. GW 28 With this in mind, individuals must determine whether what they are doing is proper when they eat the bread and drink from the cup. NIV 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. GW 29 Anyone who eats and drinks is eating and drinking a judgment against himself when he doesn't recognize the Lord's body. NIV 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. GW 30 This is the reason why many of you are weak and sick and quite a number [of you] have died. NIV 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. GW 31 If we were judging ourselves correctly, we would not be judged. NIV 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. GW 32 But when the Lord judges us, he disciplines us so that we won't be condemned along with the rest of the world. NIV 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. GW 33 Therefore, brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, wait for each other. NIV 33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. GW 34 Whoever is hungry should eat at home so that you don't have a gathering that brings judgment on you. I will give directions concerning the other matters when I come. NIV 34 Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.
