1 Samuel 3

NAS 1 Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD before Eli. And word from the LORD was rare in those days, visions were infrequent . NIV 1 The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions. NAS 2 It happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place (now his eyesight had begun to grow dim and he could not see well), NIV 2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. NAS 3 and the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was, NIV 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God was. NAS 4 that the LORD called Samuel; and he said, "Here I am." NIV 4 Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” NAS 5 Then he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, lie down again." So he went and lay down. NIV 5 And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down. NAS 6 The LORD called yet again, "Samuel!" So Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he answered, "I did not call, my son, lie down again." NIV 6 Again the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” NAS 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD , nor had the word of the LORD yet been revealed to him. NIV 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. NAS 8 So the LORD called Samuel again for the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli discerned that the LORD was calling the boy. NIV 8 A third time the LORD called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realized that the LORD was calling the boy. NAS 9 And Eli said to Samuel, "Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, LORD , for Your servant is listening.' " So Samuel went and lay down in his place. NIV 9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. NAS 10 Then the LORD came and stood and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for Your servant is listening." NIV 10 The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” NAS 11 The LORD said to Samuel, "Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. NIV 11 And the LORD said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle. NAS 12 "In that day I will carry out against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. NIV 12 At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. NAS 13 "For I have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons brought a curse on themselves and he did not rebuke them. NIV 13 For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them. NAS 14 "Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever ." NIV 14 Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’ ” NAS 15 So Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the house of the LORD . But Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. NIV 15 Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, NAS 16 Then Eli called Samuel and said, "Samuel, my son." And he said, "Here I am." NIV 16 but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.” Samuel answered, “Here I am.” NAS 17 He said, "What is the word that He spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. May God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the words that He spoke to you." NIV 17 “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you.” NAS 18 So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, "It is the LORD ; let Him do what seems good to Him." NIV 18 So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes.” NAS 19 Thus Samuel grew and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fail . NIV 19 The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. NAS 20 All Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the LORD . NIV 20 And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD. NAS 21 And the LORD appeared again at Shiloh, because the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the LORD . NIV 21 The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.
