1 Chronicles 23

CSB 1 When David was old and full of days, he installed his son Solomon as king over Israel. NIV 1 When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel. CSB 2 Then he gathered all the leaders of Israel, the priests, and the Levites. NIV 2 He also gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites. CSB 3 The Levites 30 years old and above were counted; the total number of men was 38,000 by headcount. NIV 3 The Levites thirty years old or more were counted, and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand. CSB 4 "Of these," [David said], "24,000 are to be in charge of the work on the Lord's temple, 6,000 are to be officers and judges NIV 4 David said, “Of these, twenty-four thousand are to be in charge of the work of the temple of the LORD and six thousand are to be officials and judges. CSB 5 4,000 are to be gatekeepers, and 4,000 are to praise the Lord with the instruments that I have made for worship." NIV 5 Four thousand are to be gatekeepers and four thousand are to praise the LORD with the musical instruments I have provided for that purpose.” CSB 6 Then David divided them into divisions according to Levi's sons: Gershom, Kohath, and Merari. NIV 6 David separated the Levites into divisions corresponding to the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. CSB 7 The Gershomites: Ladan and Shimei. NIV 7 Belonging to the Gershonites: Ladan and Shimei. CSB 8 Ladan's sons: Jehiel was the first, then Zetham, and Joel-three. NIV 8 The sons of Ladan: Jehiel the first, Zetham and Joel—three in all. CSB 9 Shimei's sons: Shelomoth, Haziel, and Haran-three. Those were the heads of the families of Ladan. NIV 9 The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth, Haziel and Haran—three in all. These were the heads of the families of Ladan. CSB 10 Shimei's sons: Jahath, Zizah, Jeush, and Beriah. Those were Shimei's sons-four. NIV 10 And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Ziza, Jeush and Beriah. These were the sons of Shimei—four in all. CSB 11 Jahath was the first and Zizah was the second; however, Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became an ancestral house [and received] a single assignment. NIV 11 Jahath was the first and Ziza the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; so they were counted as one family with one assignment. CSB 12 Kohath's sons: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel-four. NIV 12 The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel—four in all. CSB 13 Amram's sons: Aaron and Moses. Aaron, along with his descendants, was set apart forever to consecrate the most holy things, to burn incense in the presence of the Lord, to minister to Him, and to pronounce blessings in His name forever. NIV 13 The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. Aaron was set apart, he and his descendants forever, to consecrate the most holy things, to offer sacrifices before the LORD, to minister before him and to pronounce blessings in his name forever. CSB 14 As for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi. NIV 14 The sons of Moses the man of God were counted as part of the tribe of Levi. CSB 15 Moses' sons: Gershom and Eliezer. NIV 15 The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. CSB 16 Gershom's sons: Shebuel first. NIV 16 The descendants of Gershom: Shubael was the first. CSB 17 Eliezer's sons were Rehabiah, first; Eliezer did not have any other sons, but Rehabiah's sons were very numerous. NIV 17 The descendants of Eliezer: Rehabiah was the first. Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very numerous. CSB 18 Izhar's sons: Shelomith was first. NIV 18 The sons of Izhar: Shelomith was the first. CSB 19 Hebron's sons: Jeriah was first, Amariah second, Jahaziel third, and Jekameam fourth. NIV 19 The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth. CSB 20 Uzziel's sons: Micah was first, and Isshiah second. NIV 20 The sons of Uzziel: Micah the first and Ishiah the second. CSB 21 Merari's sons: Mahli and Mushi. Mahli's sons: Eleazar and Kish. NIV 21 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. CSB 22 Eleazar died having no sons, only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them. NIV 22 Eleazar died without having sons: he had only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them. CSB 23 Mushi's sons: Mahli, Eder, and Jeremoth-three. NIV 23 The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth—three in all. CSB 24 These were the sons of Levi by their ancestral houses-the heads of families, according to their registration by name in the headcount-20 years old or more, who worked in the service of the Lord's temple. NIV 24 These were the descendants of Levi by their families—the heads of families as they were registered under their names and counted individually, that is, the workers twenty years old or more who served in the temple of the LORD. CSB 25 For David said, "The Lord God of Israel has given rest to His people, and He has come to stay in Jerusalem forever. NIV 25 For David had said, “Since the LORD, the God of Israel, has granted rest to his people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever, CSB 26 Also, the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the equipment for its service"- NIV 26 the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles used in its service.” CSB 27 for according to the last words of David, the Levites 20 years old or more were to be counted- NIV 27 According to the last instructions of David, the Levites were counted from those twenty years old or more. CSB 28 "but their duty will be to assist the sons of Aaron with the service of the Lord's temple, being responsible for the courts and the chambers, the purification of all the holy things, and the work of the service of God's temple- NIV 28 The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron’s descendants in the service of the temple of the LORD: to be in charge of the courtyards, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the house of God. CSB 29 as well as the rows [of the bread of the Presence], the fine flour for the grain offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, the baking, the mixing, and all measurements of volume and length. NIV 29 They were in charge of the bread set out on the table, the special flour for the grain offerings, the thin loaves made without yeast, the baking and the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size. CSB 30 They are also to stand every morning to give thanks and praise to the Lord, and likewise in the evening. NIV 30 They were also to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD. They were to do the same in the evening CSB 31 Whenever burnt offerings are offered to the Lord on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed festivals, they are to do so regularly in the Lord's presence according to the number prescribed for them. NIV 31 and whenever burnt offerings were presented to the LORD on the Sabbaths, at the New Moon feasts and at the appointed festivals. They were to serve before the LORD regularly in the proper number and in the way prescribed for them. CSB 32 They are to carry out their responsibilities to the tent of meeting, to the holy place, and to their relatives, the sons of Aaron, in the service of the Lord's temple." NIV 32 And so the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the tent of meeting, for the Holy Place and, under their relatives the descendants of Aaron, for the service of the temple of the LORD.
