NAS 1 And David spoke the words of this song to the LORD in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. NIV 1 David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. NAS 2 He said, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; NIV 2 He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; NAS 3 My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My savior, You save me from violence. NIV 3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior— from violent people you save me. NAS 4 "I call upon the LORD , who is worthy to be praised, And I am saved from my enemies. NIV 4 “I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies. NAS 5 "For the waves of death encompassed me; The torrents of destruction overwhelmed me; NIV 5 The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. NAS 6 The cords of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. NIV 6 The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. NAS 7 "In my distress I called upon the LORD , Yes, I cried to my God; And from His temple He heard my voice, And my cry for help came into His ears. NIV 7 “In my distress I called to the LORD; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears. NAS 8 "Then the earth shook and quaked, The foundations of heaven were trembling And were shaken, because He was angry. NIV 8 The earth trembled and quaked, the foundations of the heavens shook; they trembled because he was angry. NAS 9 "Smoke went up out of His nostrils, Fire from His mouth devoured; Coals were kindled by it. NIV 9 Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. NAS 10 "He bowed the heavens also, and came down With thick darkness under His feet. NIV 10 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. NAS 11 "And He rode on a cherub and flew; And He appeared on the wings of the wind. NIV 11 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. NAS 12 "And He made darkness canopies around Him, A mass of waters, thick clouds of the sky. NIV 12 He made darkness his canopy around him— the dark rain clouds of the sky. NAS 13 "From the brightness before Him Coals of fire were kindled. NIV 13 Out of the brightness of his presence bolts of lightning blazed forth. NAS 14 "The LORD thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered His voice. NIV 14 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. NAS 15 "And He sent out arrows, and scattered them, Lightning, and routed them. NIV 15 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them. NAS 16 "Then the channels of the sea appeared, The foundations of the world were laid bare By the rebuke of the LORD , At the blast of the breath of His nostrils. NIV 16 The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of breath from his nostrils. NAS 17 "He sent from on high, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. NIV 17 “He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. NAS 18 "He delivered me from my strong enemy, From those who hated me, for they were too strong for me. NIV 18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. NAS 19 "They confronted me in the day of my calamity, But the LORD was my support. NIV 19 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. NAS 20 "He also brought me forth into a broad place; He rescued me, because He delighted in me. NIV 20 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. NAS 21 "The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me. NIV 21 “The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. NAS 22 "For I have kept the ways of the LORD , And have not acted wickedly against my God. NIV 22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I am not guilty of turning from my God. NAS 23 "For all His ordinances were before me, And as for His statutes, I did not depart from them. NIV 23 All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. NAS 24 "I was also blameless toward Him, And I kept myself from my iniquity. NIV 24 I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. NAS 25 "Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, According to my cleanness before His eyes. NIV 25 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. NAS 26 "With the kind You show Yourself kind, With the blameless You show Yourself blameless; NIV 26 “To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, NAS 27 With the pure You show Yourself pure, And with the perverted You show Yourself astute. NIV 27 to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd. NAS 28 "And You save an afflicted people; But Your eyes are on the haughty whom You abase. NIV 28 You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low. NAS 29 "For You are my lamp, O LORD ; And the LORD illumines my darkness. NIV 29 You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light. NAS 30 "For by You I can run upon a troop; By my God I can leap over a wall. NIV 30 With your help I can advance against a troop ; with my God I can scale a wall. NAS 31 "As for God, His way is blameless; The word of the LORD is tested; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. NIV 31 “As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. NAS 32 "For who is God, besides the LORD ? And who is a rock, besides our God? NIV 32 For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? NAS 33 "God is my strong fortress; And He sets the blameless in His way. NIV 33 It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. NAS 34 "He makes my feet like hinds' feet, And sets me on my high places. NIV 34 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. NAS 35 "He trains my hands for battle, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. NIV 35 He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. NAS 36 "You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, And Your help makes me great. NIV 36 You make your saving help my shield; your help has made me great. NAS 37 "You enlarge my steps under me, And my feet have not slipped. NIV 37 You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way. NAS 38 "I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, And I did not turn back until they were consumed. NIV 38 “I pursued my enemies and crushed them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. NAS 39 "And I have devoured them and shattered them, so that they did not rise; And they fell under my feet. NIV 39 I crushed them completely, and they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. NAS 40 "For You have girded me with strength for battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me. NIV 40 You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me. NAS 41 "You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me, And I destroyed those who hated me. NIV 41 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes. NAS 42 "They looked, but there was none to save; Even to the LORD , but He did not answer them. NIV 42 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them— to the LORD, but he did not answer. NAS 43 "Then I pulverized them as the dust of the earth; I crushed and stamped them as the mire of the streets. NIV 43 I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets. NAS 44 "You have also delivered me from the contentions of my people; You have kept me as head of the nations; A people whom I have not known serve me. NIV 44 “You have delivered me from the attacks of the peoples; you have preserved me as the head of nations. People I did not know now serve me, NAS 45 "Foreigners pretend obedience to me; As soon as they hear , they obey me. NIV 45 foreigners cower before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me. NAS 46 "Foreigners lose heart, And come trembling out of their fortresses. NIV 46 They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. NAS 47 "The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock; And exalted be God, the rock of my salvation, NIV 47 “The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior! NAS 48 The God who executes vengeance for me, And brings down peoples under me, NIV 48 He is the God who avenges me, who puts the nations under me, NAS 49 Who also brings me out from my enemies; You even lift me above those who rise up against me; You rescue me from the violent man. NIV 49 who sets me free from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me. NAS 50 "Therefore I will give thanks to You, O LORD , among the nations, And I will sing praises to Your name. NIV 50 Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name. NAS 51 "He is a tower of deliverance to His king, And shows lovingkindness to His anointed, To David and his descendants forever ." NIV 51 “He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”
