20 Cuando Abner se dio vuelta y lo vio venir, le gritó:<br />—¿Eres tú, Asael?<br />—Sí, soy yo —le contestó.

21 —¡Ve a pelear con otro! —le advirtió Abner—. Enfréntate a uno de los jóvenes y despójalo de sus armas.<br />Pero Asael siguió persiguiéndolo.

22 Abner le volvió a gritar:<br />—¡Vete de aquí! No quiero matarte. ¿Cómo podría dar la cara a tu hermano Joab?

23 Pero Asael se negó a regresar, entonces Abner le clavó la parte trasera de su lanza en el estómago. La lanza le salió por la espalda y Asael cayó muerto al suelo. Todos los que pasaban por allí se detenían, al ver a Asael tendido muerto.

24 Cuando Joab y Abisai se enteraron de lo sucedido, salieron a perseguir a Abner.<br />El sol ya se ponía cuando llegaron a la colina de Amma, cerca de Gía en el camino que lleva al desierto de Gabaón.

26 Abner le gritó a Joab:<br />—¿Es inevitable que nos matemos unos a otros? ¿No te das cuenta de que lo único que produce es amargura? ¿Cuándo vas a ordenar que tus hombres dejen de perseguir a sus hermanos israelitas?

27 Entonces dijo Joab:<br />—Si no hubieras hablado, solo Dios sabe lo que habría pasado, porque los habríamos perseguido toda la noche de ser necesario.

28 De manera que Joab tocó el cuerno de carnero, y sus hombres dejaron de perseguir a las tropas de Israel.

29 Durante toda esa noche Abner y sus hombres retrocedieron por el Jordán.<br /> Cruzaron el río Jordán y viajaron toda la mañana<br /> sin detenerse hasta llegar a Mahanaim.

30 Mientras tanto, Joab y sus hombres también regresaron a casa. Cuando Joab contó sus bajas, descubrió que solo faltaban diecinueve hombres, además de Asael.

20 Abner looked behind him and asked, “Is that you, Asahel?” “It is,” he answered.

21 Then Abner said to him, “Turn aside to the right or to the left; take on one of the young men and strip him of his weapons.” But Asahel would not stop chasing him.

22 Again Abner warned Asahel, “Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down? How could I look your brother Joab in the face?”

23 But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel’s stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.

24 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner, and as the sun was setting, they came to the hill of Ammah, near Giah on the way to the wasteland of Gibeon.

25 Then the men of Benjamin rallied behind Abner. They formed themselves into a group and took their stand on top of a hill.

26 Abner called out to Joab, “Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize that this will end in bitterness? How long before you order your men to stop pursuing their fellow Israelites?”

27 Joab answered, “As surely as God lives, if you had not spoken, the men would have continued pursuing them until morning.”

28 So Joab blew the trumpet, and all the troops came to a halt; they no longer pursued Israel, nor did they fight anymore.

29 All that night Abner and his men marched through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, continued through the morning hours and came to Mahanaim.

30 Then Joab stopped pursuing Abner and assembled the whole army. Besides Asahel, nineteen of David’s men were found missing.
