2 Samuel 22

RSVA 1 And David spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. NIV 1 David sang to the LORD the words of this song when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. RSVA 2 He said, "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, NIV 2 He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; RSVA 3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; thou savest me from violence. NIV 3 my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior— from violent people you save me. RSVA 4 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies. NIV 4 “I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies. RSVA 5 "For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of perdition assailed me; NIV 5 The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. RSVA 9 Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him. NIV 9 Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. RSVA 10 He bowed the heavens, and came down; thick darkness was under his feet. NIV 10 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. RSVA 11 He rode on a cherub, and flew; he was seen upon the wings of the wind. NIV 11 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. RSVA 12 He made darkness around him his canopy, thick clouds, a gathering of water. NIV 12 He made darkness his canopy around him— the dark rain clouds of the sky. RSVA 13 Out of the brightness before him coals of fire flamed forth. NIV 13 Out of the brightness of his presence bolts of lightning blazed forth. RSVA 14 The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice. NIV 14 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. RSVA 15 And he sent out arrows, and scattered them; lightning, and routed them. NIV 15 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them. RSVA 16 Then the channels of the sea were seen, the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils. NIV 16 The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of breath from his nostrils. RSVA 17 "He reached from on high, he took me, he drew me out of many waters. NIV 17 “He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. RSVA 18 He delivered me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me; for they were too mighty for me. NIV 18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. RSVA 19 They came upon me in the day of my calamity; but the LORD was my stay. NIV 19 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. RSVA 20 He brought me forth into a broad place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. NIV 20 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me. RSVA 21 "The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he recompensed me. NIV 21 “The LORD has dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me. RSVA 22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God. NIV 22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I am not guilty of turning from my God. RSVA 23 For all his ordinances were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside. NIV 23 All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. RSVA 24 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. NIV 24 I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin. RSVA 25 Therefore the LORD has recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. NIV 25 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight. RSVA 26 "With the loyal thou dost show thyself loyal; with the blameless man thou dost show thyself blameless; NIV 26 “To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless, RSVA 27 with the pure thou dost show thyself pure, and with the crooked thou dost show thyself perverse. NIV 27 to the pure you show yourself pure, but to the devious you show yourself shrewd. RSVA 28 Thou dost deliver a humble people, but thy eyes are upon the haughty to bring them down. NIV 28 You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low. RSVA 29 Yea, thou art my lamp, O LORD, and my God lightens my darkness. NIV 29 You, LORD, are my lamp; the LORD turns my darkness into light. RSVA 30 Yea, by thee I can crush a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. NIV 30 With your help I can advance against a troop ; with my God I can scale a wall. RSVA 31 This God--his way is perfect; the promise of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. NIV 31 “As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. RSVA 32 "For who is God, but the LORD? And who is a rock, except our God? NIV 32 For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? RSVA 33 This God is my strong refuge, and has made my way safe. NIV 33 It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. RSVA 34 He made my feet like hinds' feet, and set me secure on the heights. NIV 34 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. RSVA 35 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. NIV 35 He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. RSVA 36 Thou hast given me the shield of thy salvation, and thy help made me great. NIV 36 You make your saving help my shield; your help has made me great. RSVA 37 Thou didst give a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip; NIV 37 You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way. RSVA 38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until they were consumed. NIV 38 “I pursued my enemies and crushed them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed. RSVA 39 I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise; they fell under my feet. NIV 39 I crushed them completely, and they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet. RSVA 40 For thou didst gird me with strength for the battle; thou didst make my assailants sink under me. NIV 40 You armed me with strength for battle; you humbled my adversaries before me. RSVA 41 Thou didst make my enemies turn their backs to me, those who hated me, and I destroyed them. NIV 41 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes. RSVA 42 They looked, but there was none to save; they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them. NIV 42 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them— to the LORD, but he did not answer. RSVA 43 I beat them fine as the dust of the earth, I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets. NIV 43 I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth; I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets. RSVA 44 "Thou didst deliver me from strife with the peoples; thou didst keep me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. NIV 44 “You have delivered me from the attacks of the peoples; you have preserved me as the head of nations. People I did not know now serve me, RSVA 45 Foreigners came cringing to me; as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me. NIV 45 foreigners cower before me; as soon as they hear of me, they obey me. RSVA 46 Foreigners lost heart, and came trembling out of their fastnesses. NIV 46 They all lose heart; they come trembling from their strongholds. RSVA 47 "The LORD lives; and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, NIV 47 “The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior! RSVA 48 the God who gave me vengeance and brought down peoples under me, NIV 48 He is the God who avenges me, who puts the nations under me, RSVA 49 who brought me out from my enemies; thou didst exalt me above my adversaries, thou didst deliver me from men of violence. NIV 49 who sets me free from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes; from a violent man you rescued me. RSVA 50 "For this I will extol thee, O LORD, among the nations, and sing praises to thy name. NIV 50 Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name. RSVA 51 Great triumphs he gives to his king, and shows steadfast love to his anointed, to David, and his descendants for ever." NIV 51 “He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”
