Colossians 2

BBE 1 For it is my desire to give you news of the great fight I am making for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not seen my face in the flesh; NIV 1 I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. BBE 2 So that their hearts may be comforted, and that being joined together in love, they may come to the full wealth of the certain knowledge of the secret of God, even Christ, NIV 2 My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, BBE 3 In whom are all the secret stores of wisdom and knowledge. NIV 3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. BBE 4 I say this so that you may not be turned away by any deceit of words. NIV 4 I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. BBE 5 For though I am not present in the flesh, still I am with you in the spirit, seeing with joy your order, and your unchanging faith in Christ. NIV 5 For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is. BBE 6 As, then, you took Christ Jesus the Lord, so go on in him, NIV 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, BBE 7 Rooted and based together in him, strong in the faith which the teaching gave you, giving praise to God at all times. NIV 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. BBE 8 Take care that no one takes you away by force, through man's wisdom and deceit, going after the beliefs of men and the theories of the world, and not after Christ: NIV 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. BBE 9 For in him all the wealth of God's being has a living form, NIV 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, BBE 10 And you are complete in him, who is the head of all rule and authority: NIV 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. BBE 11 In whom you had a circumcision not made with hands, in the putting off of the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ; NIV 11 In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, BBE 12 Having been put to death with him in baptism, by which you came to life again with him, through faith in the working of God, who made him come back from the dead. NIV 12 having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead. BBE 13 And you, being dead through your sins and the evil condition of your flesh, to you, I say, he gave life together with him, and forgiveness of all our sins; NIV 13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, BBE 14 Having put an end to the handwriting of the law which was against us, taking it out of the way by nailing it to his cross; NIV 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. BBE 15 Having made himself free from the rule of authorities and powers, he put them openly to shame, glorying over them in it. NIV 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. BBE 16 For this reason let no man be your judge in any question of food or drink or feast days or new moons or Sabbaths: NIV 16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. BBE 17 For these are an image of the things which are to come; but the body is Christ's. NIV 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. BBE 18 Let no man take your reward from you by consciously making little of himself and giving worship to angels; having his thoughts fixed on the things which he has seen, being foolishly lifted up in his natural mind, NIV 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. BBE 19 And not joined to the Head, from whom all the body, being given strength and kept together through its joins and bands, has its growth with the increase of God. NIV 19 They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow. BBE 20 If you were made free, by your death with Christ, from the rules of the world, why do you put yourselves under the authority of orders NIV 20 Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: BBE 21 Which say there may be no touching, tasting, or taking in your hands, NIV 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? BBE 22 (Rules which are all to come to an end with their use) after the orders and teaching of men? NIV 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. BBE 23 These things seem to have a sort of wisdom in self-ordered worship and making little of oneself, and being cruel to the body, not honouring it by giving it its natural use. NIV 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
