Deuteronomy 14

BBE 1 You are the children of the Lord your God: you are not to make cuts on your bodies or take off the hair on your brows in honour of the dead; NIV 1 You are the children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead, BBE 2 For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has taken you to be his special people out of all the nations on the face of the earth. NIV 2 for you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the LORD has chosen you to be his treasured possession. BBE 3 No disgusting thing may be your food. NIV 3 Do not eat any detestable thing. BBE 4 These are the beasts which you may have for food: the ox, the sheep, and the goat; NIV 4 These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, BBE 5 The hart, the gazelle, and the roe, the mountain goat and the pygarg and the antelope and the mountain sheep. NIV 5 the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. BBE 6 Any beast which has a division in the horn of its foot and whose food comes back into its mouth to be crushed again, may be used for food. NIV 6 You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud. BBE 7 But even among these, there are some which may not be used for food: such as the camel, the hare, and the coney, which are unclean to you, because, though their food comes back, the horn of their feet is not parted in two. NIV 7 However, of those that chew the cud or that have a divided hoof you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the hyrax. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a divided hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you. BBE 8 And the pig is unclean to you, because though it has a division in the horn of its foot, its food does not come back; their flesh may not be used for food or their dead bodies touched by you. NIV 8 The pig is also unclean; although it has a divided hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses. BBE 9 And of the things living in the waters, you may take all those who have wings for swimming with and skins formed of thin plates. NIV 9 Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales. BBE 10 But any which have no skin-plates or wings for swimming, you may not take; they are unclean for you. NIV 10 But anything that does not have fins and scales you may not eat; for you it is unclean. BBE 11 All clean birds may be used for food. NIV 11 You may eat any clean bird. BBE 12 But these birds you may not take: the eagle and the gier-eagle and the ospray; NIV 12 But these you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture, BBE 13 The falcon and the kite, and birds of that sort; NIV 13 the red kite, the black kite, any kind of falcon, BBE 14 Every raven, and all birds of that sort; NIV 14 any kind of raven, BBE 15 And the ostrich and the night-hawk and the sea-hawk and birds of that sort; NIV 15 the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, BBE 16 The little owl and the great owl and the water-hen; NIV 16 the little owl, the great owl, the white owl, BBE 17 And the pelican and the vulture and the cormorant; NIV 17 the desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant, BBE 18 The stork and the heron and birds of that sort, and the hoopoe and the bat. NIV 18 the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat. BBE 19 Every winged thing which goes flat on the earth is unclean to you and may not be used as food. NIV 19 All flying insects are unclean to you; do not eat them. BBE 20 But all clean birds you may take. NIV 20 But any winged creature that is clean you may eat. BBE 21 You may not have as food anything which has come to a natural death; the man from another country who is living with you may take it for food, or you may get a price for it from one of another nation; for you are a holy people to the Lord your God. The young goat is not to be cooked in its mother's milk. NIV 21 Do not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to the foreigner residing in any of your towns, and they may eat it, or you may sell it to any other foreigner. But you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk. BBE 22 Put on one side a tenth of all the increase of your seed, produced year by year. NIV 22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. BBE 23 And make a feast before the Lord your God, in the place which is to be marked out, where his name will be for ever, of the tenth part of your grain and your wine and your oil, and the first births of your herds and your flocks; so that you may have the fear of the Lord your God in your hearts at all times. NIV 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. BBE 24 And if the way is so long that you are not able to take these things to the place marked out by the Lord your God for his name, when he has given you his blessing, because it is far away from you; NIV 24 But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the LORD your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the LORD will choose to put his Name is so far away), BBE 25 Then let these things be exchanged for money, and, taking the money in your hand, go to the place marked out by the Lord your God for himself; NIV 25 then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the LORD your God will choose. BBE 26 And with the money get whatever you have a desire for, oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your soul's desire may be: and make a feast there before the Lord your God, and be glad, you and all your house; NIV 26 Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice. BBE 27 And give a thought to the Levite who is living among you, for he has no part or heritage in the land. NIV 27 And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own. BBE 28 At the end of every three years take a tenth part of all your increase for that year, and put it in store inside your walls: NIV 28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, BBE 29 And the Levite, because he has no part or heritage in the land, and the man from a strange country, and the child who has no father, and the widow, who are living among you, will come and take food and have enough; and so the blessing of the Lord your God will be on you in everything you do. NIV 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
