2 Fui a Jerusalén, porque Dios me reveló que debía hacerlo. Durante mi tiempo allí, me reuní en privado con los que eran reconocidos como los dirigentes de la iglesia y les presenté el mensaje que predico a los gentiles.<br /> Quería asegurarme de que estábamos de acuerdo, porque temía que todos mis esfuerzos hubieran sido inútiles y que estaba corriendo la carrera en vano.

3 Sin embargo, ellos me respaldaron y ni siquiera exigieron que mi compañero Tito se circuncidara, a pesar de que era griego.

4 Incluso esa cuestión surgió solo a causa de algunos que se dicen cristianos —falsos cristianos en realidad<br />—, que se habían infiltrado entre nosotros. Se metieron en secreto para espiarnos y privarnos de la libertad que tenemos en Cristo Jesús. Pues querían esclavizarnos y obligarnos a seguir los reglamentos judíos,

5 pero no nos doblegamos ante ellos ni por un solo instante. Queríamos preservar la verdad del mensaje del evangelio para ustedes.

6 Los líderes de la iglesia no tenían nada que agregar a lo que yo predicaba. (Dicho sea de paso, su fama de grandes líderes a mí no me afectó para nada, porque Dios no tiene favoritos).

7 Al contrario, ellos comprendieron que Dios me había dado la responsabilidad de predicar el evangelio a los gentiles tal como le había dado a Pedro la responsabilidad de predicar a los judíos.

8 Pues el mismo Dios que actuaba por medio de Pedro, apóstol a los judíos, también actuaba por medio de mí, apóstol a los gentiles.

9 De hecho, Santiago, Pedro<br /> y Juan —quienes eran considerados pilares de la iglesia— reconocieron el don que Dios me había dado y nos aceptaron a Bernabé y a mí como sus colegas. Nos animaron a seguir predicando a los gentiles mientras ellos continuaban su tarea con los judíos.

10 La única sugerencia que hicieron fue que siguiéramos ayudando a los pobres, algo que yo siempre tengo deseos de hacer.

11 Pablo enfrenta a Pedro<br />Pero cuando Pedro llegó a Antioquía, tuve que enfrentarlo cara a cara, porque él estaba muy equivocado en lo que hacía.

12 Cuando llegó por primera vez, Pedro comía con los gentiles que son cristianos, quienes no estaban circuncidados; pero después, cuando llegaron algunos amigos de Santiago, Pedro no quiso comer más con esos gentiles. Tenía miedo a la crítica de los que insistían en la necesidad de la circuncisión.

13 Como resultado, otros cristianos judíos imitaron la hipocresía de Pedro, e incluso Bernabé se dejó llevar por esa hipocresía.

14 Cuando vi que ellos no seguían la verdad del mensaje del evangelio, le dije a Pedro delante de todos los demás: «Si tú, que eres judío de nacimiento, dejaste a un lado las leyes judías y vives como un gentil, ¿por qué ahora tratas de obligar a estos gentiles a seguir las tradiciones judías?

15 »Tú y yo somos judíos de nacimiento, no somos “pecadores” como los gentiles.

16 Sin embargo, sabemos que una persona es declarada justa ante Dios por la fe en Jesucristo y no por la obediencia a la ley. Y nosotros hemos creído en Cristo Jesús para poder ser declarados justos ante Dios por causa de nuestra fe en Cristo y no porque hayamos obedecido la ley. Pues nadie jamás será declarado justo ante Dios mediante la obediencia a la ley»<br />.

17 Pero supongamos que intentamos ser declarados justos ante Dios por medio de la fe en Cristo y luego se nos declara culpables por haber abandonado la ley. ¿Acaso esto quiere decir que Cristo nos ha llevado al pecado? ¡Por supuesto que no!

18 Más bien, soy un pecador si vuelvo a construir el viejo sistema de la ley que ya eché abajo.

19 Pues, cuando intenté obedecer la ley, la ley misma me condenó. Así que morí a la ley —es decir, dejé de intentar cumplir todas sus exigencias— a fin de vivir para Dios.

20 Mi antiguo yo ha sido crucificado con Cristo. Ya no vivo yo, sino que Cristo vive en mí. Así que vivo en este cuerpo terrenal confiando en el Hijo de Dios, quien me amó y se entregó a sí mismo por mí.

21 Yo no tomo la gracia de Dios como algo sin sentido. Pues, si cumplir la ley pudiera hacernos justos ante Dios, entonces no habría sido necesario que Cristo muriera.

1 Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also.

2 I went in response to a revelation and, meeting privately with those esteemed as leaders, I presented to them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. I wanted to be sure I was not running and had not been running my race in vain.

3 Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek.

4 This matter arose because some false believers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves.

5 We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.

6 As for those who were held in high esteem—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism—they added nothing to my message.

7 On the contrary, they recognized that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been to the circumcised.

8 For God, who was at work in Peter as an apostle to the circumcised, was also at work in me as an apostle to the Gentiles.

9 James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised.

10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along.

11 When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.

12 For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.

13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

15 “We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles

16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

17 “But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners, doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!

18 If I rebuild what I destroyed, then I really would be a lawbreaker.

19 “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God.

20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!”
