Genesis 1

VUL 1 in principio creavit Deus caelum et terram NIV 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. VUL 2 terra autem erat inanis et vacua et tenebrae super faciem abyssi et spiritus Dei ferebatur super aquas NIV 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. VUL 3 dixitque Deus fiat lux et facta est lux NIV 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. VUL 4 et vidit Deus lucem quod esset bona et divisit lucem ac tenebras NIV 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. VUL 5 appellavitque lucem diem et tenebras noctem factumque est vespere et mane dies unus NIV 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. VUL 6 dixit quoque Deus fiat firmamentum in medio aquarum et dividat aquas ab aquis NIV 6 And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. VUL 10 et vocavit Deus aridam terram congregationesque aquarum appellavit maria et vidit Deus quod esset bonum NIV 10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. VUL 11 et ait germinet terra herbam virentem et facientem semen et lignum pomiferum faciens fructum iuxta genus suum cuius semen in semet ipso sit super terram et factum est ita NIV 11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. VUL 12 et protulit terra herbam virentem et adferentem semen iuxta genus suum lignumque faciens fructum et habens unumquodque sementem secundum speciem suam et vidit Deus quod esset bonum NIV 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. VUL 13 factumque est vespere et mane dies tertius NIV 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day. VUL 14 dixit autem Deus fiant luminaria in firmamento caeli ut dividant diem ac noctem et sint in signa et tempora et dies et annos NIV 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, VUL 15 ut luceant in firmamento caeli et inluminent terram et factum est ita NIV 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. VUL 16 fecitque Deus duo magna luminaria luminare maius ut praeesset diei et luminare minus ut praeesset nocti et stellas NIV 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. VUL 17 et posuit eas in firmamento caeli ut lucerent super terram NIV 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, VUL 18 et praeessent diei ac nocti et dividerent lucem ac tenebras et vidit Deus quod esset bonum NIV 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. VUL 19 et factum est vespere et mane dies quartus NIV 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. VUL 20 dixit etiam Deus producant aquae reptile animae viventis et volatile super terram sub firmamento caeli NIV 20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. VUL 22 benedixitque eis dicens crescite et multiplicamini et replete aquas maris avesque multiplicentur super terram NIV 22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” VUL 23 et factum est vespere et mane dies quintus NIV 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. VUL 25 et fecit Deus bestias terrae iuxta species suas et iumenta et omne reptile terrae in genere suo et vidit Deus quod esset bonum NIV 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. VUL 26 et ait faciamus hominem ad imaginem et similitudinem nostram et praesit piscibus maris et volatilibus caeli et bestiis universaeque terrae omnique reptili quod movetur in terra NIV 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” VUL 27 et creavit Deus hominem ad imaginem suam ad imaginem Dei creavit illum masculum et feminam creavit eos NIV 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. VUL 28 benedixitque illis Deus et ait crescite et multiplicamini et replete terram et subicite eam et dominamini piscibus maris et volatilibus caeli et universis animantibus quae moventur super terram NIV 28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” VUL 29 dixitque Deus ecce dedi vobis omnem herbam adferentem semen super terram et universa ligna quae habent in semet ipsis sementem generis sui ut sint vobis in escam NIV 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. VUL 30 et cunctis animantibus terrae omnique volucri caeli et universis quae moventur in terra et in quibus est anima vivens ut habeant ad vescendum et factum est ita NIV 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
