Genesis 22

NRS 1 After these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." CEB 1 After these events, God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" Abraham answered, "I'm here." NRS 2 He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I shall show you." CEB 2 God said, "Take your son, your only son whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him up as an entirely burned offering there on one of the mountains that I will show you." NRS 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; he cut the wood for the burnt offering, and set out and went to the place in the distance that God had shown him. CEB 3 Abraham got up early in the morning, harnessed his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, together with his son Isaac. He split the wood for the entirely burned offering, set out, and went to the place God had described to him. NRS 4 On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place far away. CEB 4 On the third day, Abraham looked up and saw the place at a distance. NRS 5 Then Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there; we will worship, and then we will come back to you." CEB 5 Abraham said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will walk up there, worship, and then come back to you." NRS 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. CEB 6 Abraham took the wood for the entirely burned offering and laid it on his son Isaac. He took the fire and the knife in his hand, and the two of them walked on together. NRS 7 Isaac said to his father Abraham, "Father!" And he said, "Here I am, my son." He said, "The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" CEB 7 Isaac said to his father Abraham, "My father?" Abraham said, "I'm here, my son." Isaac said, "Here is the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the entirely burned offering?" NRS 8 Abraham said, "God himself will provide the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So the two of them walked on together. CEB 8 Abraham said, "The lamb for the entirely burned offering? God will see to it, my son." The two of them walked on together. NRS 9 When they came to the place that God had shown him, Abraham built an altar there and laid the wood in order. He bound his son Isaac, and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. CEB 9 They arrived at the place God had described to him. Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He tied up his son Isaac and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. NRS 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to kill his son. CEB 10 Then Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. NRS 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." CEB 11 But the LORD's messenger called out to Abraham from heaven, "Abraham? Abraham?" Abraham said, "I'm here." NRS 12 He said, "Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me." CEB 12 The messenger said, "Don't stretch out your hand against the young man, and don't do anything to him. I now know that you revere God and didn't hold back your son, your only son, from me." NRS 13 And Abraham looked up and saw a ram, caught in a thicket by its horns. Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. CEB 13 Abraham looked up and saw a single ram caught by its horns in the dense underbrush. Abraham went over, took the ram, and offered it as an entirely burned offering instead of his son. NRS 14 So Abraham called that place "The Lord will provide"; as it is said to this day, "On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided." CEB 14 Abraham named that place “the LORD sees.” That is the reason people today say, "On this mountain the LORD is seen." NRS 15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, CEB 15 The LORD's messenger called out to Abraham from heaven a second time NRS 16 and said, "By myself I have sworn, says the Lord: Because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son, CEB 16 and said, "I give my word as the LORD that because you did this and didn't hold back your son, your only son, NRS 17 I will indeed bless you, and I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of their enemies, CEB 17 I will bless you richly and I will give you countless descendants, as many as the stars in the sky and as the grains of sand on the seashore. They will conquer their enemies' cities. NRS 18 and by your offspring shall all the nations of the earth gain blessing for themselves, because you have obeyed my voice." CEB 18 All the nations of the earth will be blessed because of your descendants, because you obeyed me." NRS 19 So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beer-sheba; and Abraham lived at Beer-sheba. CEB 19 After Abraham returned to the young men, they got up and went to Beer-sheba where Abraham lived. NRS 20 Now after these things it was told Abraham, "Milcah also has borne children, to your brother Nahor: CEB 20 After these events, Abraham was told: "Milcah has now also given birth to sons for your brother Nahor. NRS 21 Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, CEB 21 They are Uz his oldest son, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, NRS 22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." CEB 22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel." NRS 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham's brother. CEB 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. These are the eight Milcah bore for Nahor, Abraham's brother. NRS 24 Moreover, his concubine, whose name was Reumah, bore Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah. CEB 24 His secondary wife's name was Reumah, and she gave birth to Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.
