Genesis 30

CEB 1 When Rachel realized that she could bear Jacob no children, Rachel became jealous of her sister and said to Jacob, "Give me children! If you don't, I may as well be dead." NRS 1 When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister; and she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I shall die!" CEB 2 Jacob was angry at Rachel and said, "Do you think I'm God? God alone has kept you from giving birth!" NRS 2 Jacob became very angry with Rachel and said, "Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?" CEB 3 She said, "Here's my servant Bilhah. Sleep with her, and she will give birth for me. Because of her, I will also have children." NRS 3 Then she said, "Here is my maid Bilhah; go in to her, that she may bear upon my knees and that I too may have children through her." CEB 4 So Rachel gave her servant Bilhah to Jacob as his wife, and he slept with her. NRS 4 So she gave him her maid Bilhah as a wife; and Jacob went in to her. CEB 5 Bilhah became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Jacob. NRS 5 And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. CEB 6 Rachel said, "God has judged in my favor, heard my voice, and given me a son." So she named him Dan. NRS 6 Then Rachel said, "God has judged me, and has also heard my voice and given me a son"; therefore she named him Dan. CEB 7 Rachel's servant Bilhah became pregnant again and gave birth to a second son for Jacob. NRS 7 Rachel's maid Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. CEB 8 Rachel said, "I've competed fiercely with my sister, and now I've won." So she named him Naphtali. NRS 8 Then Rachel said, "With mighty wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister, and have prevailed"; so she named him Naphtali. CEB 9 When Leah realized that she had stopped bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as his wife. NRS 9 When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her maid Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife. CEB 10 Leah's servant Zilpah gave birth to a son for Jacob, NRS 10 Then Leah's maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son. CEB 11 and Leah said, "What good luck!" So she named him Gad. NRS 11 And Leah said, "Good fortune!" so she named him Gad. CEB 12 Leah's servant Zilpah gave birth to a second son for Jacob, NRS 12 Leah's maid Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. CEB 13 and Leah said, "I'm happy now because women call me happy." So she named him Asher. NRS 13 And Leah said, "Happy am I! For the women will call me happy"; so she named him Asher. CEB 14 During the wheat harvest, Reuben found some erotic herbs in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, "Give me your son's erotic herbs." NRS 14 In the days of wheat harvest Reuben went and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes." CEB 15 Leah replied, "Isn't it enough that you've taken my husband? Now you want to take my son's erotic herbs too?" Rachel said, "For your son's erotic herbs, Jacob may sleep with you tonight." NRS 15 But she said to her, "Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son's mandrakes also?" Rachel said, "Then he may lie with you tonight for your son's mandrakes." CEB 16 When Jacob came back from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, "You must sleep with me because I've paid for you with my son's erotic herbs." So he slept with her that night. NRS 16 When Jacob came from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him, and said, "You must come in to me; for I have hired you with my son's mandrakes." So he lay with her that night. CEB 17 God responded to Leah. She became pregnant and gave birth to a fifth son for Jacob. NRS 17 And God heeded Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. CEB 18 Leah said, "God gave me what I paid for, what I deserved for giving my servant to my husband." So she named him Issachar. NRS 18 Leah said, "God has given me my hire because I gave my maid to my husband"; so she named him Issachar. CEB 19 Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to a sixth son for Jacob, NRS 19 And Leah conceived again, and she bore Jacob a sixth son. CEB 20 and she said, "God has given me a wonderful gift. Now my husband will honor me since I've borne him six sons." So she named him Zebulun. NRS 20 Then Leah said, "God has endowed me with a good dowry; now my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons"; so she named him Zebulun. CEB 21 After this, she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah. NRS 21 Afterwards she bore a daughter, and named her Dinah. CEB 22 Then God remembered Rachel, responded to her, and let her conceive. NRS 22 Then God remembered Rachel, and God heeded her and opened her womb. CEB 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, "God has taken away my shame." NRS 23 She conceived and bore a son, and said, "God has taken away my reproach"; CEB 24 She named him Joseph, saying to herself, May the LORD give me another son. NRS 24 and she named him Joseph, saying, "May the Lord add to me another son!" CEB 25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, "Send me off so that I can go to my own place and my own country. NRS 25 When Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, "Send me away, that I may go to my own home and country. CEB 26 Give me my wives and children whom I've worked for, and I will go. You know the work I've done for you." NRS 26 Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know very well the service I have given you." CEB 27 Laban said to him, "Do me this favor. I've discovered by a divine sign that the LORD has blessed me because of you, NRS 27 But Laban said to him, "If you will allow me to say so, I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you; CEB 28 so name your price and I will pay it." NRS 28 name your wages, and I will give it." CEB 29 Jacob said to him, "You know how I've worked for you, and how well your livestock have done with me. NRS 29 Jacob said to him, "You yourself know how I have served you, and how your cattle have fared with me. CEB 30 While in my care, what little you had has multiplied a great deal. The LORD blessed you wherever I took your livestock. Now, when will I be able to work for my own household too?" NRS 30 For you had little before I came, and it has increased abundantly; and the Lord has blessed you wherever I turned. But now when shall I provide for my own household also?" CEB 31 Laban said, "What will I pay you?" Jacob said, "Don't pay me anything. If you will do this for me, I will take care of your flock again, and keep a portion. NRS 31 He said, "What shall I give you?" Jacob said, "You shall not give me anything; if you will do this for me, I will again feed your flock and keep it: CEB 32 I will go through the entire flock today, taking out all of the speckled and spotted sheep, all of the black male lambs, and all of the spotted and speckled female goats. That will be my price. NRS 32 let me pass through all your flock today, removing from it every speckled and spotted sheep and every black lamb, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and such shall be my wages. CEB 33 I will be completely honest with you: when you come to check on our agreement, every female goat with me that isn't speckled or spotted and every male lamb with me that isn't black will be considered stolen." NRS 33 So my honesty will answer for me later, when you come to look into my wages with you. Every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats and black among the lambs, if found with me, shall be counted stolen." CEB 34 Laban said, "All right; let's do it." NRS 34 Laban said, "Good! Let it be as you have said." CEB 35 However, on that very day Laban took out the striped and spotted male goats and all of the speckled and spotted female goats—any with some white in it—and all of the black male lambs, and gave them to his sons. NRS 35 But that day Laban removed the male goats that were striped and spotted, and all the female goats that were speckled and spotted, every one that had white on it, and every lamb that was black, and put them in charge of his sons; CEB 36 He put a three-day trip between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was watching the rest of Laban's flock. NRS 36 and he set a distance of three days' journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob was pasturing the rest of Laban's flock. CEB 37 Then Jacob took new branches from poplar, almond, and plane trees; and he peeled white stripes on them, exposing the branches' white color. NRS 37 Then Jacob took fresh rods of poplar and almond and plane, and peeled white streaks in them, exposing the white of the rods. CEB 38 He set the branches that he had peeled near the watering troughs so that they were in front of the flock when they drank, because they often mated when they came to drink. NRS 38 He set the rods that he had peeled in front of the flocks in the troughs, that is, the watering places, where the flocks came to drink. And since they bred when they came to drink, CEB 39 When the flock mated in front of the branches, they gave birth to striped, speckled, and spotted young. NRS 39 the flocks bred in front of the rods, and so the flocks produced young that were striped, speckled, and spotted. CEB 40 Jacob sorted out the lambs, turning the flock to face the striped and black ones in Laban's flock but keeping his flock separate, setting them apart from Laban's flock. NRS 40 Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the striped and the completely black animals in the flock of Laban; and he put his own droves apart, and did not put them with Laban's flock. CEB 41 Whenever the strongest of the flock mated, Jacob put the branches in front of them near the watering troughs so that they mated near the branches. NRS 41 Whenever the stronger of the flock were breeding, Jacob laid the rods in the troughs before the eyes of the flock, that they might breed among the rods, CEB 42 But he didn't put branches up for the weakest of the flock. So the weakest became Laban's and the strongest Jacob's. NRS 42 but for the feebler of the flock he did not lay them there; so the feebler were Laban's, and the stronger Jacob's. CEB 43 The man Jacob became very, very rich: he owned large flocks, female and male servants, camels, and donkeys. NRS 43 Thus the man grew exceedingly rich, and had large flocks, and male and female slaves, and camels and donkeys.
