NIV

1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,
1 In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest:
2 "Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying: This people say, `The time has not come, the time that the LORD'S house should be built.'"
2 This is what the LORD Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD’s house.’ ”
3 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
3 Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
4 "Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your ceilinged houses, and this house lie waste?"
4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?”
5 Now therefore, thus saith the LORD of hosts: "Consider your ways!
5 Now this is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways.
6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe yourselves, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages, earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes."
6 You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.”
7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts: "Consider your ways!
7 This is what the LORD Almighty says: “Give careful thought to your ways.
8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified," saith the LORD.
8 Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build my house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored,” says the LORD.
9 "Ye looked for much, and lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I blew upon it. Why?" saith the LORD of hosts. "Because of Mine house that is laid waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.
9 “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the LORD Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house.
10 Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.
10 Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops.
11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labor of the hands."
11 I called for a drought on the fields and the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the olive oil and everything else the ground produces, on people and livestock, and on all the labor of your hands.”
12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him; and the people feared before the LORD.
12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD.
13 Then spoke Haggai, the LORD'S messenger, in the LORD'S message unto the people, saying, "I am with you, saith the LORD."
13 Then Haggai, the LORD’s messenger, gave this message of the LORD to the people: “I am with you,” declares the LORD.
14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and began work on the house of the LORD of hosts their God,
14 So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God,
