James 5

MSG 1 And a final word to you arrogant rich: Take some lessons in lament. You'll need buckets for the tears when the crash comes upon you. NIV 1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. MSG 2 Your money is corrupt and your fine clothes stink. NIV 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. MSG 3 Your greedy luxuries are a cancer in your gut, destroying your life from within. You thought you were piling up wealth. What you've piled up is judgment. NIV 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. MSG 4 All the workers you've exploited and cheated cry out for judgment. The groans of the workers you used and abused are a roar in the ears of the Master Avenger. NIV 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. MSG 5 You've looted the earth and lived it up. But all you'll have to show for it is a fatter than usual corpse. NIV 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. MSG 6 In fact, what you've done is condemn and murder perfectly good persons, who stand there and take it. NIV 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you. MSG 7 Meanwhile, friends, wait patiently for the Master's Arrival. You see farmers do this all the time, waiting for their valuable crops to mature, patiently letting the rain do its slow but sure work. NIV 7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. MSG 8 Be patient like that. Stay steady and strong. The Master could arrive at any time. NIV 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. MSG 9 Friends, don't complain about each other. A far greater complaint could be lodged against you, you know. The Judge is standing just around the corner. NIV 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! MSG 10 Take the old prophets as your mentors. They put up with anything, went through everything, and never once quit, all the time honoring God. NIV 10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. MSG 11 What a gift life is to those who stay the course! You've heard, of course, of Job's staying power, and you know how God brought it all together for him at the end. That's because God cares, cares right down to the last detail. NIV 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. MSG 12 And since you know that he cares, let your language show it. Don't add words like "I swear to God" to your own words. Don't show your impatience by concocting oaths to hurry up God. Just say yes or no. Just say what is true. That way, your language can't be used against you. NIV 12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned. MSG 13 Are you hurting? Pray. Do you feel great? Sing. NIV 13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. MSG 14 Are you sick? Call the church leaders together to pray and anoint you with oil in the name of the Master. NIV 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. MSG 15 Believing-prayer will heal you, and Jesus will put you on your feet. And if you've sinned, you'll be forgiven - healed inside and out. NIV 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. MSG 16 Make this your common practice: Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed. The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with. NIV 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. MSG 17 Elijah, for instance, human just like us, prayed hard that it wouldn't rain, and it didn't - not a drop for three and a half years. NIV 17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. MSG 18 Then he prayed that it would rain, and it did. The showers came and everything started growing again. NIV 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops. MSG 19 My dear friends, if you know people who have wandered off from God's truth, don't write them off. Go after them. Get them back NIV 19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, MSG 20 and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God. NIV 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
