Jeremias 10

LXX 1 Hear ye the word of the Lord, which he has spoken to you, O house of Israel. NIV 1 Hear what the LORD says to you, people of Israel. LXX 2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn ye not the ways of the heathen, and be not alarmed at the signs of the sky; for they are alarmed at them, on their faces. NIV 2 This is what the LORD says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the heavens, though the nations are terrified by them. LXX 3 For the customs of the nations are vain; it is a tree cut out of the forest, the work of the carpenter, or a molten image. NIV 3 For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. LXX 4 beautified with silver and gold, they fix them with hammers and nails; NIV 4 They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. LXX 5 they will set them up that they may not move; it is wrought silver, they will not walk, it is forged silver They must certainly be borne, for they cannot ride . Fear them not; for they cannot do any evil, and there is no good in them. NIV 5 Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.” LXX 6 NIV 6 No one is like you, LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power. LXX 7 NIV 7 Who should not fear you, King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise leaders of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you. LXX 8 NIV 8 They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols. LXX 9 NIV 9 Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple— all made by skilled workers. LXX 10 NIV 10 But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath. LXX 11 Thus shall ye say to them, Let the gods which have not made heaven and earth perish from off the earth, and from under this sky. NIV 11 “Tell them this: ‘These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.’ ” LXX 12 It is the Lord that made the earth by his strength, who set up the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the sky, NIV 12 But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. LXX 13 and set abundance of waters in the sky, and brought up clouds from the ends of the earth; he made lightnings for the rain, and brought forth light out of his treasures. NIV 13 When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses. LXX 14 Every man is deprived of knowledge, every goldsmith is confounded because of his graven images; for he has cast false gods, there is no breath in them. NIV 14 Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. The images he makes are a fraud; they have no breath in them. LXX 15 They are vain works, wrought in mockery; in the time of their visitation they shall perish. NIV 15 They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish. LXX 16 Such is not the portion of Jacob; for he that formed all things, he is his inheritance; the Lord is his name. NIV 16 He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including Israel, the people of his inheritance— the LORD Almighty is his name. LXX 17 He has gathered thy substance from without the lodged in choice . NIV 17 Gather up your belongings to leave the land, you who live under siege. LXX 18 For thus saith the Lord, Behold, I overthrow the inhabitants of this land with affliction, that thy plague may be discovered. NIV 18 For this is what the LORD says: “At this time I will hurl out those who live in this land; I will bring distress on them so that they may be captured.” LXX 19 Alas for thy ruin! thy plague is grievous: and I said, Surely this is thy wound, and it has overtaken thee. NIV 19 Woe to me because of my injury! My wound is incurable! Yet I said to myself, “This is my sickness, and I must endure it.” LXX 20 Thy tabernacle is in a ruinous state, it has perished; and all thy curtains have been torn asunder: my children and my cattle are no more: there is no more any place for my tabernacle, place for my curtains. NIV 20 My tent is destroyed; all its ropes are snapped. My children are gone from me and are no more; no one is left now to pitch my tent or to set up my shelter. LXX 21 For the shepherds have become foolish, and have not sought the Lord; therefore the whole pasture has failed, and have been scattered. NIV 21 The shepherds are senseless and do not inquire of the LORD; so they do not prosper and all their flock is scattered. LXX 22 Behold, there comes a sound of a noise, and a great earthquake from the land of the north, to make the cities of Juda a desolation, and a resting-place for ostriches. NIV 22 Listen! The report is coming— a great commotion from the land of the north! It will make the towns of Judah desolate, a haunt of jackals. LXX 23 I know, O Lord, that man's way is not his own; neither shall a man go, and direct his going. NIV 23 LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps. LXX 24 Chasten us, O Lord, but with judgment; and not in wrath, lest thou make us few. NIV 24 Discipline me, LORD, but only in due measure— not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing. LXX 25 Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that have not known thee, and upon the families that have not called upon thy name: for they have devoured Jacob, and consumed him, and have made his pasture desolate. NIV 25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you, on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.
