Job 34

GNTA 1 You men are so wise, so clever; listen now to what I am saying. NIV 1 Then Elihu said: GNTA 3 You know good food when you taste it, but not wise words when you hear them. NIV 3 For the ear tests words as the tongue tastes food. GNTA 4 It is up to us to decide the case. NIV 4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn together what is good. GNTA 5 Job claims that he is innocent, that God refuses to give him justice. NIV 5 “Job says, ‘I am innocent, but God denies me justice. GNTA 6 He asks, "How could I lie and say I am wrong? I am fatally wounded, but I am sinless." NIV 6 Although I am right, I am considered a liar; although I am guiltless, his arrow inflicts an incurable wound.’ GNTA 7 Have you ever seen anyone like this man Job? He never shows respect for God. NIV 7 Is there anyone like Job, who drinks scorn like water? GNTA 8 He likes the company of evil people and goes around with sinners. NIV 8 He keeps company with evildoers; he associates with the wicked. GNTA 9 He says that it never does any good to try to follow God's will. NIV 9 For he says, ‘There is no profit in trying to please God.’ GNTA 10 Listen to me, you men who understand! Will Almighty God do what is wrong? NIV 10 “So listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do evil, from the Almighty to do wrong. GNTA 11 He rewards people for what they do and treats them as they deserve. NIV 11 He repays everyone for what they have done; he brings on them what their conduct deserves. GNTA 12 Almighty God does not do evil; he is never unjust to anyone. NIV 12 It is unthinkable that God would do wrong, that the Almighty would pervert justice. GNTA 13 Did God get his power from someone else? Did someone put him in charge of the world? NIV 13 Who appointed him over the earth? Who put him in charge of the whole world? GNTA 14 If God took back the breath of life, NIV 14 If it were his intention and he withdrew his spirit and breath, GNTA 15 then everyone living would die and turn into dust again. NIV 15 all humanity would perish together and mankind would return to the dust. GNTA 16 Now listen to me, if you are wise. NIV 16 “If you have understanding, hear this; listen to what I say. GNTA 17 Are you condemning the righteous God? Do you think that [he ]hates justice? NIV 17 Can someone who hates justice govern? Will you condemn the just and mighty One? GNTA 18 God condemns kings and rulers when they are worthless or wicked. NIV 18 Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’ and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’ GNTA 19 He does not take the side of rulers nor favor the rich over the poor, for he created everyone. NIV 19 who shows no partiality to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of his hands? GNTA 20 We may suddenly die at night. God strikes us down and we perish; he kills the mighty with no effort at all. NIV 20 They die in an instant, in the middle of the night; the people are shaken and they pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand. GNTA 21 He watches every step we take. NIV 21 “His eyes are on the ways of mortals; he sees their every step. GNTA 22 There is no darkness dark enough to hide a sinner from God. NIV 22 There is no deep shadow, no utter darkness, where evildoers can hide. GNTA 23 God does not need to set a time for us to go and be judged by him. NIV 23 God has no need to examine people further, that they should come before him for judgment. GNTA 24 He does not need an investigation to remove leaders and replace them with others. NIV 24 Without inquiry he shatters the mighty and sets up others in their place. GNTA 25 Because he knows what they do; he overthrows them and crushes them by night. NIV 25 Because he takes note of their deeds, he overthrows them in the night and they are crushed. GNTA 26 He punishes sinners where all can see it, NIV 26 He punishes them for their wickedness where everyone can see them, GNTA 27 because they have stopped following him and ignored all his commands. NIV 27 because they turned from following him and had no regard for any of his ways. GNTA 28 They forced the poor to cry out to God, and he heard their calls for help. NIV 28 They caused the cry of the poor to come before him, so that he heard the cry of the needy. GNTA 29 If God decided to do nothing at all, no one could criticize him. If he hid his face, we would be helpless. NIV 29 But if he remains silent, who can condemn him? If he hides his face, who can see him? Yet he is over individual and nation alike, GNTA 30 There would be nothing that nations could do to keep godless oppressors from ruling them. NIV 30 to keep the godless from ruling, from laying snares for the people. GNTA 31 Job, have you confessed your sins to God and promised not to sin again? NIV 31 “Suppose someone says to God, ‘I am guilty but will offend no more. GNTA 32 Have you asked God to show you your faults, and have you agreed to stop doing evil? NIV 32 Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.’ GNTA 33 Since you object to what God does, can you expect him to do what you want? The decision is yours, not mine; tell us now what you think. NIV 33 Should God then reward you on your terms, when you refuse to repent? You must decide, not I; so tell me what you know. GNTA 34 Any sensible person will surely agree; and the wise who hear me will say NIV 34 “Men of understanding declare, wise men who hear me say to me, GNTA 35 that Job is speaking from ignorance and that nothing he says makes sense. NIV 35 ‘Job speaks without knowledge; his words lack insight.’ GNTA 36 Think through everything that Job says; you will see that he talks like an evil man. NIV 36 Oh, that Job might be tested to the utmost for answering like a wicked man! GNTA 37 To his sins he adds rebellion; in front of us all he mocks God. NIV 37 To his sin he adds rebellion; scornfully he claps his hands among us and multiplies his words against God.”
