John 16

NRSA 1 "I have said these things to you to keep you from stumbling. NIV 1 “All this I have told you so that you will not fall away. NRSA 2 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God. NIV 2 They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. NRSA 3 And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me. NIV 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me. NRSA 4 But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. NIV 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you, NRSA 5 But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, "Where are you going?' NIV 5 but now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ NRSA 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. NIV 6 Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. NRSA 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. NIV 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. NRSA 8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: NIV 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: NRSA 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; NIV 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; NRSA 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; NIV 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; NRSA 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. NIV 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. NRSA 12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. NIV 12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. NRSA 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. NIV 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. NRSA 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. NIV 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. NRSA 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. NIV 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” NRSA 16 "A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me." NIV 16 Jesus went on to say, “In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.” NRSA 17 Then some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying to us, "A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'; and "Because I am going to the Father'?" NIV 17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, “What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” NRSA 18 They said, "What does he mean by this "a little while'? We do not know what he is talking about." NIV 18 They kept asking, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We don’t understand what he is saying.” NRSA 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, "A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me'? NIV 19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? NRSA 20 Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. NIV 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. NRSA 21 When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. NIV 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. NRSA 22 So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. NIV 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy. NRSA 23 On that day you will ask nothing of me. Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. NIV 23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. NRSA 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete. NIV 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. NRSA 25 "I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly of the Father. NIV 25 “Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. NRSA 26 On that day you will ask in my name. I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; NIV 26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. NRSA 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. NIV 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. NRSA 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." NIV 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.” NRSA 29 His disciples said, "Yes, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure of speech! NIV 29 Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. NRSA 30 Now we know that you know all things, and do not need to have anyone question you; by this we believe that you came from God." NIV 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.” NRSA 31 Jesus answered them, "Do you now believe? NIV 31 “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. NRSA 32 The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. NIV 32 “A time is coming and in fact has come when you will be scattered, each to your own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. NRSA 33 I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!" NIV 33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
