SBLGNT 1 Ἐπειδήπερ πολλοὶ ἐπεχείρησαν ἀνατάξασθαι διήγησιν περὶ τῶν πεπληροφορημένων ἐν ἡμῖν πραγμάτων, NIV 1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, SBLGNT 2 καθὼς παρέδοσαν ἡμῖν οἱ ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς αὐτόπται καὶ ὑπηρέται γενόμενοι τοῦ λόγου, NIV 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. NIV 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. NIV 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. NIV 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old. SBLGNT 10 καὶ πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος ἦν τοῦ λαοῦ προσευχόμενον ἔξω τῇ ὥρᾳ τοῦ θυμιάματος · NIV 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. SBLGNT 11 ὤφθη δὲ αὐτῷ ἄγγελος κυρίου ἑστὼς ἐκ δεξιῶν τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου τοῦ θυμιάματος. NIV 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. SBLGNT 12 καὶ ἐταράχθη Ζαχαρίας ἰδών, καὶ φόβος ἐπέπεσεν ἐπ’ αὐτόν. NIV 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. SBLGNT 13 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ ἄγγελος · Μὴ φοβοῦ, Ζαχαρία, διότι εἰσηκούσθη ἡ δέησίς σου, καὶ ἡ γυνή σου Ἐλισάβετ γεννήσει υἱόν σοι, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰωάννην · NIV 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. SBLGNT 14 καὶ ἔσται χαρά σοι καὶ ἀγαλλίασις, καὶ πολλοὶ ἐπὶ τῇ γενέσει αὐτοῦ χαρήσονται · NIV 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, SBLGNT 15 ἔσται γὰρ μέγας ἐνώπιον τοῦ κυρίου, καὶ οἶνον καὶ σίκερα οὐ μὴ πίῃ, καὶ πνεύματος ἁγίου πλησθήσεται ἔτι ἐκ κοιλίας μητρὸς αὐτοῦ, NIV 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. SBLGNT 16 καὶ πολλοὺς τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ἐπιστρέψει ἐπὶ κύριον τὸν θεὸν αὐτῶν · NIV 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. SBLGNT 17 καὶ αὐτὸς προελεύσεται ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ δυνάμει Ἠλίου, ἐπιστρέψαι καρδίας πατέρων ἐπὶ τέκνα καὶ ἀπειθεῖς ἐν φρονήσει δικαίων, ἑτοιμάσαι κυρίῳ λαὸν κατεσκευασμένον. NIV 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” SBLGNT 18 καὶ εἶπεν Ζαχαρίας πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον · Κατὰ τί γνώσομαι τοῦτο; ἐγὼ γάρ εἰμι πρεσβύτης καὶ ἡ γυνή μου προβεβηκυῖα ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτῆς. NIV 18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” SBLGNT 19 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῷ · Ἐγώ εἰμι Γαβριὴλ ὁ παρεστηκὼς ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ, καὶ ἀπεστάλην λαλῆσαι πρὸς σὲ καὶ εὐαγγελίσασθαί σοι ταῦτα · NIV 19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. SBLGNT 20 καὶ ἰδοὺ ἔσῃ σιωπῶν καὶ μὴ δυνάμενος λαλῆσαι ἄχρι ἧς ἡμέρας γένηται ταῦτα, ἀνθ’ ὧν οὐκ ἐπίστευσας τοῖς λόγοις μου, οἵτινες πληρωθήσονται εἰς τὸν καιρὸν αὐτῶν. NIV 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.” SBLGNT 21 Καὶ ἦν ὁ λαὸς προσδοκῶν τὸν Ζαχαρίαν, καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐν τῷ χρονίζειν ἐν τῷ ναῷ αὐτόν. NIV 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. SBLGNT 22 ἐξελθὼν δὲ οὐκ ἐδύνατο λαλῆσαι αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἐπέγνωσαν ὅτι ὀπτασίαν ἑώρακεν ἐν τῷ ναῷ · καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν διανεύων αὐτοῖς, καὶ διέμενεν κωφός. NIV 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak. SBLGNT 23 καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τῆς λειτουργίας αὐτοῦ, ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ. NIV 23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. SBLGNT 24 Μετὰ δὲ ταύτας τὰς ἡμέρας συνέλαβεν Ἐλισάβετ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ · καὶ περιέκρυβεν ἑαυτὴν μῆνας πέντε, λέγουσα NIV 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. SBLGNT 25 ὅτι Οὕτως μοι πεποίηκεν κύριος ἐν ἡμέραις αἷς ἐπεῖδεν ἀφελεῖν ὄνειδός μου ἐν ἀνθρώποις. NIV 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.” SBLGNT 26 Ἐν δὲ τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ἕκτῳ ἀπεστάλη ὁ ἄγγελος Γαβριὴλ ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς πόλιν τῆς Γαλιλαίας ᾗ ὄνομα Ναζαρὲθ NIV 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, SBLGNT 27 πρὸς παρθένον ἐμνηστευμένην ἀνδρὶ ᾧ ὄνομα Ἰωσὴφ ἐξ οἴκου Δαυὶδ, καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς παρθένου Μαριάμ. NIV 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. SBLGNT 28 καὶ εἰσελθὼν πρὸς αὐτὴν εἶπεν · Χαῖρε, κεχαριτωμένη, ὁ κύριος μετὰ σοῦ. NIV 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” SBLGNT 29 ἡ δὲ ἐπὶ τῷ λόγῳ διεταράχθη ⸃ καὶ διελογίζετο ποταπὸς εἴη ὁ ἀσπασμὸς οὗτος. NIV 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. SBLGNT 30 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος αὐτῇ · Μὴ φοβοῦ, Μαριάμ, εὗρες γὰρ χάριν παρὰ τῷ θεῷ · NIV 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. SBLGNT 31 καὶ ἰδοὺ συλλήμψῃ ἐν γαστρὶ καὶ τέξῃ υἱόν, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν. NIV 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. SBLGNT 32 οὗτος ἔσται μέγας καὶ υἱὸς Ὑψίστου κληθήσεται, καὶ δώσει αὐτῷ κύριος ὁ θεὸς τὸν θρόνον Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, NIV 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, SBLGNT 33 καὶ βασιλεύσει ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον Ἰακὼβ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας, καὶ τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔσται τέλος. NIV 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” SBLGNT 34 εἶπεν δὲ Μαριὰμ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον · Πῶς ἔσται τοῦτο, ἐπεὶ ἄνδρα οὐ γινώσκω; NIV 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” SBLGNT 35 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῇ · Πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐπελεύσεται ἐπὶ σέ, καὶ δύναμις Ὑψίστου ἐπισκιάσει σοι · διὸ καὶ τὸ γεννώμενον ἅγιον κληθήσεται, υἱὸς θεοῦ · NIV 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. SBLGNT 36 καὶ ἰδοὺ Ἐλισάβετ ἡ συγγενίς σου καὶ αὐτὴ συνείληφεν υἱὸν ἐν γήρει αὐτῆς, καὶ οὗτος μὴν ἕκτος ἐστὶν αὐτῇ τῇ καλουμένῃ στείρᾳ · NIV 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. SBLGNT 37 ὅτι οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ ⸃ πᾶν ῥῆμα. NIV 37 For no word from God will ever fail.” SBLGNT 38 εἶπεν δὲ Μαριάμ · Ἰδοὺ ἡ δούλη κυρίου · γένοιτό μοι κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἀπ’ αὐτῆς ὁ ἄγγελος. NIV 38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. SBLGNT 39 Ἀναστᾶσα δὲ Μαριὰμ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ταύταις ἐπορεύθη εἰς τὴν ὀρεινὴν μετὰ σπουδῆς εἰς πόλιν Ἰούδα, NIV 39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, SBLGNT 40 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ζαχαρίου καὶ ἠσπάσατο τὴν Ἐλισάβετ. NIV 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. SBLGNT 41 καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἤκουσεν τὸν ἀσπασμὸν τῆς Μαρίας ἡ Ἐλισάβετ, ἐσκίρτησεν τὸ βρέφος ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐπλήσθη πνεύματος ἁγίου ἡ Ἐλισάβετ, NIV 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. SBLGNT 42 καὶ ἀνεφώνησεν κραυγῇ μεγάλῃ καὶ εἶπεν · Εὐλογημένη σὺ ἐν γυναιξίν, καὶ εὐλογημένος ὁ καρπὸς τῆς κοιλίας σου. NIV 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! SBLGNT 43 καὶ πόθεν μοι τοῦτο ἵνα ἔλθῃ ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ κυρίου μου πρὸς ἐμέ; NIV 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? SBLGNT 44 ἰδοὺ γὰρ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡ φωνὴ τοῦ ἀσπασμοῦ σου εἰς τὰ ὦτά μου, ἐσκίρτησεν ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει τὸ βρέφος ⸃ ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ μου. NIV 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. SBLGNT 45 καὶ μακαρία ἡ πιστεύσασα ὅτι ἔσται τελείωσις τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρὰ κυρίου. NIV 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” SBLGNT 46 Καὶ εἶπεν Μαριάμ · Μεγαλύνει ἡ ψυχή μου τὸν κύριον, NIV 46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord SBLGNT 47 καὶ ἠγαλλίασεν τὸ πνεῦμά μου ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τῷ σωτῆρί μου · NIV 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, SBLGNT 48 ὅτι ἐπέβλεψεν ἐπὶ τὴν ταπείνωσιν τῆς δούλης αὐτοῦ, ἰδοὺ γὰρ ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν μακαριοῦσίν με πᾶσαι αἱ γενεαί · NIV 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, SBLGNT 49 ὅτι ἐποίησέν μοι μεγάλα ὁ δυνατός, καὶ ἅγιον τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ, NIV 49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. SBLGNT 50 καὶ τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ εἰς γενεὰς καὶ γενεὰς ⸃ τοῖς φοβουμένοις αὐτόν. NIV 50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. SBLGNT 51 Ἐποίησεν κράτος ἐν βραχίονι αὐτοῦ, διεσκόρπισεν ὑπερηφάνους διανοίᾳ καρδίας αὐτῶν · NIV 51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. SBLGNT 52 καθεῖλεν δυνάστας ἀπὸ θρόνων καὶ ὕψωσεν ταπεινούς, NIV 52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. SBLGNT 53 πεινῶντας ἐνέπλησεν ἀγαθῶν καὶ πλουτοῦντας ἐξαπέστειλεν κενούς. NIV 53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. SBLGNT 54 ἀντελάβετο Ἰσραὴλ παιδὸς αὐτοῦ, μνησθῆναι ἐλέους, NIV 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful SBLGNT 55 καθὼς ἐλάλησεν πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν, τῷ Ἀβραὰμ καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. NIV 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.” SBLGNT 56 Ἔμεινεν δὲ Μαριὰμ σὺν αὐτῇ ὡς μῆνας τρεῖς, καὶ ὑπέστρεψεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς. NIV 56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. SBLGNT 57 Τῇ δὲ Ἐλισάβετ ἐπλήσθη ὁ χρόνος τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν, καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱόν. NIV 57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. SBLGNT 58 καὶ ἤκουσαν οἱ περίοικοι καὶ οἱ συγγενεῖς αὐτῆς ὅτι ἐμεγάλυνεν κύριος τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ μετ’ αὐτῆς, καὶ συνέχαιρον αὐτῇ. NIV 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. SBLGNT 59 Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ὀγδόῃ ⸃ ἦλθον περιτεμεῖν τὸ παιδίον, καὶ ἐκάλουν αὐτὸ ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Ζαχαρίαν. NIV 59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, SBLGNT 60 καὶ ἀποκριθεῖσα ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ εἶπεν · Οὐχί, ἀλλὰ κληθήσεται Ἰωάννης. NIV 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.” SBLGNT 61 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτὴν ὅτι Οὐδείς ἐστιν ἐκ τῆς συγγενείας ⸃ σου ὃς καλεῖται τῷ ὀνόματι τούτῳ. NIV 61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.” SBLGNT 62 ἐνένευον δὲ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ τὸ τί ἂν θέλοι καλεῖσθαι αὐτό. NIV 62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. SBLGNT 63 καὶ αἰτήσας πινακίδιον ἔγραψεν λέγων · Ἰωάννης ἐστὶν ὄνομα αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἐθαύμασαν πάντες. NIV 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.” SBLGNT 64 ἀνεῴχθη δὲ τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ παραχρῆμα καὶ ἡ γλῶσσα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐλάλει εὐλογῶν τὸν θεόν. NIV 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. SBLGNT 65 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ πάντας φόβος τοὺς περιοικοῦντας αὐτούς, καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ὀρεινῇ τῆς Ἰουδαίας διελαλεῖτο πάντα τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα, NIV 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. SBLGNT 66 καὶ ἔθεντο πάντες οἱ ἀκούσαντες ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτῶν, λέγοντες · Τί ἄρα τὸ παιδίον τοῦτο ἔσται; καὶ γὰρ χεὶρ κυρίου ἦν μετ’ αὐτοῦ. NIV 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him. SBLGNT 67 Καὶ Ζαχαρίας ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἐπλήσθη πνεύματος ἁγίου καὶ ἐπροφήτευσεν λέγων · NIV 67 His father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied: SBLGNT 68 Εὐλογητὸς κύριος ὁ θεὸς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ, ὅτι ἐπεσκέψατο καὶ ἐποίησεν λύτρωσιν τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ, NIV 68 “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
