Numbers 25

CEB 1 When the Israelites lived at Shittim, the people made themselves impure by having illicit sex with Moabite women. NIV 1 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, CEB 2 The Moabite women invited the people to the sacrifices for their god. So the people ate a meal, and they worshipped their god. NIV 2 who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. CEB 3 Israel became attached to the Baal of Peor, and the LORD was angry at the Israelites. NIV 3 So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the LORD’s anger burned against them. CEB 4 The LORD said to Moses: Take all the leaders of the people and kill them on behalf of the LORD in broad daylight, so that the LORD's anger turns away from Israel. NIV 4 The LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the LORD’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.” CEB 5 Then Moses said to Israel's officials, "Each of you: kill your men who are attached to the Baal of Peor." NIV 5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.” CEB 6 An Israelite man brought a Midianite woman to his brothers in the sight of Moses and the entire Israelite community, who were weeping at the entrance of the meeting tent. NIV 6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. CEB 7 When Phinehas (Eleazar's son and Aaron the priest's grandson) saw this, he arose in the middle of the community, took a spear in his hand, NIV 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand CEB 8 went after the Israelite man into the chamber, and stabbed the two of them, the Israelite man and the woman, through the stomach. Then the plague stopped spreading among the Israelites. NIV 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; CEB 9 Yet those who died by the plague numbered twenty-four thousand. NIV 9 but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000. CEB 10 The LORD spoke to Moses: NIV 10 The LORD said to Moses, CEB 11 Phinehas (Eleazar's son and Aaron the priest's grandson) has turned back my rage toward the Israelites. Because he was jealous for me among you, I didn't consume the Israelites due to my jealousy. NIV 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. CEB 12 Therefore, say: I'm now giving him my covenant of well-being. NIV 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. CEB 13 It will be for him and his descendants a covenant of permanent priesthood, because he was jealous for his God and sought reconciliation for the Israelites. NIV 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.” CEB 14 The name of the slain Israelite man who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri the son of Salu, chief of Simeon's household. NIV 14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. CEB 15 The name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi the daughter of Zur, a tribal leader of a Midianite household. NIV 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family. CEB 16 The LORD spoke to Moses: NIV 16 The LORD said to Moses, CEB 17 Go after the Midianites and destroy them NIV 17 “Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. CEB 18 because they went after you by the deception they devised for you at Peor with Cozbi, the Midianite chief's daughter and their sister, who was killed on the same day as the plague during the events at Peor. NIV 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
