Proverbs 1

RHE 1 The parables of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel, NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: RHE 2 To know wisdom, and instruction: NIV 2 for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; RHE 3 To understand the words of prudence: and to receive the instruction of doctrine, justice, and judgment, and equity: NIV 3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; RHE 4 To give subtilty to little ones, to the young man knowledge and understanding. NIV 4 for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young— RHE 5 A wise man shall hear, and shall be wiser: and he that understandeth shall possess governments. NIV 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance— RHE 6 He shall understand a parable and the interpretation, the words of the wise, and their mysterious sayings. NIV 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. RHE 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Fools despise wisdom and instruction. NIV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. RHE 8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. RHE 9 That grace may be added to thy head, and a chain of gold to thy neck. NIV 9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. RHE 10 My son, if sinners shall entice thee, consent not to them. NIV 10 My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. RHE 11 If they shall say: Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us hide snares for the innocent without cause: NIV 11 If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul; RHE 12 Let us swallow him up alive like hell, and whole as one that goeth down into the pit. NIV 12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; RHE 13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoils. NIV 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; RHE 14 Cast in thy lot with us, let us all have one purse. NIV 14 cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”— RHE 15 My son, walk not thou with them, restrain thy foot from their paths. NIV 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; RHE 16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. NIV 16 for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. RHE 17 But a net is spread in vain before the eyes of them that have wings. NIV 17 How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! RHE 18 And they themselves lie in wait for their own blood, and practise deceits against their own souls. NIV 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! RHE 19 So the ways of every covetous man destroy the souls of the possessors. NIV 19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it. RHE 20 Wisdom preacheth abroad, she uttereth her voice in the streets: NIV 20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; RHE 21 At the head of multitudes she crieth out, in the entrance of the gates of the city she uttereth her words, saying: NIV 21 on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech: RHE 22 O children, how long will you love childishness, and fools covet those things which are hurtful to themselves, and the unwise hate knowledge? NIV 22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? RHE 23 Turn ye at my reproof: behold I will utter my spirit to you, and will shew you my words. NIV 23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. RHE 24 Because I called, and you refused: I stretched out my hand, and there was none that regarded. NIV 24 But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, RHE 25 You have despised all my counsel, and have neglected my reprehensions. NIV 25 since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, RHE 26 I also will laugh in your destruction, and will mock when that shall come to you which you feared. NIV 26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you— RHE 27 When sudden calamity shall fall on you, and destruction, as a tempest, shall be at hand: when tribulation and distress shall come upon you: NIV 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. RHE 28 Then shall they call upon me, and I will not hear: they shall rise in the morning, and shall not find me: NIV 28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, RHE 29 Because they have hated instruction, and received not the fear of the Lord, NIV 29 since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD. RHE 30 Nor consented to my counsel, but despised all my reproof. NIV 30 Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, RHE 31 Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, and shall be filled with their own devices. NIV 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. RHE 32 The turning away of little ones shall kill them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. NIV 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; RHE 33 But he that shall hear me, shall rest without terror, and shall enjoy abundance, without fear of evils. NIV 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
