Proverbs 1

WEB 1 The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel: NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: WEB 2 To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding; NIV 2 for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; WEB 3 To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness, justice, and equity; NIV 3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; WEB 4 To give prudence to the simple, Knowledge and discretion to the young man: NIV 4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,knowledge and discretion to the young— WEB 5 That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; That the man of understanding may attain to sound counsel: NIV 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance— WEB 6 To understand a proverb, and parables, The words and riddles of the wise. NIV 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. WEB 7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; But the foolish despise wisdom and instruction. NIV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. WEB 8 My son, listen to your father's instruction, And don't forsake your mother's teaching: NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. WEB 9 For they will be a garland to grace your head, And chains around your neck. NIV 9 They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. WEB 10 My son, if sinners entice you, don't consent. NIV 10 My son, if sinful men entice you, do not give in to them. WEB 11 If they say, "Come with us, Let's lay in wait for blood; Let's lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; NIV 11 If they say, “Come along with us; let’s lie in wait for innocent blood, let’s ambush some harmless soul; WEB 12 Let's swallow them up alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who go down into the pit. NIV 12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; WEB 13 We'll find all valuable wealth. We'll fill our houses with spoil. NIV 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; WEB 14 You shall cast your lot among us. We'll all have one purse." NIV 14 cast lots with us; we will all share the loot”— WEB 15 My son, don't walk in the way with them. Keep your foot from their path, NIV 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; WEB 16 For their feet run to evil. They hurry to shed blood. NIV 16 for their feet rush into evil, they are swift to shed blood. WEB 17 For in vain is the net spread in the sight of any bird: NIV 17 How useless to spread a net where every bird can see it! WEB 18 These lay wait for their own blood. They lurk secretly for their own lives. NIV 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they ambush only themselves! WEB 19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain. It takes away the life of its owners. NIV 19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the life of those who get it. WEB 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street. She utters her voice in the public squares. NIV 20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square; WEB 21 She calls at the head of noisy places. At the entrance of the city gates, she utters her words: NIV 21 on top of the wall she cries out, at the city gate she makes her speech: WEB 22 "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, And fools hate knowledge? NIV 22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? WEB 23 Turn at my reproof. Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you. NIV 23 Repent at my rebuke! Then I will pour out my thoughts to you, I will make known to you my teachings. WEB 24 Because I have called, and you have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one has paid attention; NIV 24 But since you refuse to listen when I call and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand, WEB 25 But you have ignored all my counsel, And wanted none of my reproof; NIV 25 since you disregard all my advice and do not accept my rebuke, WEB 26 I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you; NIV 26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you; I will mock when calamity overtakes you— WEB 27 When calamity overtakes you like a storm, When your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; When distress and anguish come on you. NIV 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. WEB 28 Then will they call on me, but I will not answer. They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me; NIV 28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me, WEB 29 Because they hated knowledge, And didn't choose the fear of Yahweh. NIV 29 since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD. WEB 30 They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof. NIV 30 Since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, WEB 31 Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own schemes. NIV 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. WEB 32 For the backsliding of the simple will kill them. The careless ease of fools will destroy them. NIV 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; WEB 33 But whoever listens to me will dwell securely, And will be at ease, without fear of harm." NIV 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
