Proverbs 16

CSB 1 The reflections of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. NIV 1 To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the LORD comes the proper answer of the tongue. CSB 2 All a man's ways seem right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the motives. NIV 2 All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the LORD. CSB 3 Commit your activities to the Lord and your plans will be achieved. NIV 3 Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. CSB 4 The Lord has prepared everything for His purpose- even the wicked for the day of disaster. NIV 4 The LORD works out everything to its proper end— even the wicked for a day of disaster. CSB 5 Everyone with a proud heart is detestable to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished. NIV 5 The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. CSB 6 Wickedness is atoned for by loyalty and faithfulness, and one turns from evil by the fear of the Lord. NIV 6 Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD evil is avoided. CSB 7 When a man's ways please the Lord, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. NIV 7 When the LORD takes pleasure in anyone’s way, he causes their enemies to make peace with them. CSB 8 Better a little with righteousness than great income with injustice. NIV 8 Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice. CSB 9 A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps. NIV 9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps. CSB 10 God's verdict is on the lips of a king; his mouth should not err in judgment. NIV 10 The lips of a king speak as an oracle, and his mouth does not betray justice. CSB 11 Honest balances and scales are the Lord's; all the weights in the bag are His concern. NIV 11 Honest scales and balances belong to the LORD; all the weights in the bag are of his making. CSB 12 Wicked behavior is detestable to kings, since a throne is established through righteousness. NIV 12 Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through righteousness. CSB 13 Righteous lips are a king's delight, and he loves one who speaks honestly. NIV 13 Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value the one who speaks what is right. CSB 14 A king's fury is a messenger of death, but a wise man appeases it. NIV 14 A king’s wrath is a messenger of death, but the wise will appease it. CSB 15 When a king's face lights up, there is life; his favor is like a cloud with spring rain. NIV 15 When a king’s face brightens, it means life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring. CSB 16 Acquire wisdom- how much better it is than gold! And acquire understanding- it is preferable to silver. NIV 16 How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver! CSB 17 The highway of the upright avoids evil; the one who guards his way protects his life. NIV 17 The highway of the upright avoids evil; those who guard their ways preserve their lives. CSB 18 Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall. NIV 18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. CSB 19 Better to be lowly of spirit with the humble than to divide plunder with the proud. NIV 19 Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud. CSB 20 The one who understands a matter finds success, and the one who trusts in the Lord will be happy. NIV 20 Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers,and blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD. CSB 21 Anyone with a wise heart is called discerning, and pleasant speech increases learning. NIV 21 The wise in heart are called discerning, and gracious words promote instruction. CSB 22 Insight is a fountain of life for its possessor, but folly is the instruction of fools. NIV 22 Prudence is a fountain of life to the prudent, but folly brings punishment to fools. CSB 23 A wise heart instructs its mouth and increases learning with its speech. NIV 23 The hearts of the wise make their mouths prudent, and their lips promote instruction. CSB 24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb: sweet to the taste and health to the body. NIV 24 Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. CSB 25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it is the way of death. NIV 25 There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death. CSB 26 A worker's appetite works for him because his hunger urges him on. NIV 26 The appetite of laborers works for them; their hunger drives them on. CSB 27 A worthless man digs up evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire. NIV 27 A scoundrel plots evil, and on their lips it is like a scorching fire. CSB 28 A contrary man spreads conflict, and a gossip separates friends. NIV 28 A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends. CSB 29 A violent man lures his neighbor, leading him in a way that is not good. NIV 29 A violent person entices their neighbor and leads them down a path that is not good. CSB 30 The one who narrows his eyes is planning deceptions; the one who compresses his lips brings about evil. NIV 30 Whoever winks with their eye is plotting perversity; whoever purses their lips is bent on evil. CSB 31 Gray hair is a glorious crown; it is found in the way of righteousness. NIV 31 Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness. CSB 32 Patience is better than power, and controlling one's temper, than capturing a city. NIV 32 Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city. CSB 33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.
