Deuteronomy 6:1-14

NRSA 1 Now this is the commandment—the statutes and the ordinances—that the Lord your God charged me to teach you to observe in the land that you are about to cross into and occupy, NIV 1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, NRSA 2 so that you and your children and your children's children may fear the Lord your God all the days of your life, and keep all his decrees and his commandments that I am commanding you, so that your days may be long. NIV 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the LORD your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. NRSA 3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe them diligently, so that it may go well with you, and so that you may multiply greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you. NIV 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you. NRSA 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. NIV 4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. NRSA 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. NIV 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. NRSA 6 Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. NIV 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. NRSA 7 Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. NIV 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. NRSA 8 Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, NIV 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. NRSA 9 and write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. NIV 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. NRSA 10 When the Lord your God has brought you into the land that he swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you—a land with fine, large cities that you did not build, NIV 10 When the LORD your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, NRSA 11 houses filled with all sorts of goods that you did not fill, hewn cisterns that you did not hew, vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant—and when you have eaten your fill, NIV 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, NRSA 12 take care that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. NIV 12 be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. NRSA 13 The Lord your God you shall fear; him you shall serve, and by his name alone you shall swear. NIV 13 Fear the LORD your God, serve him only and take your oaths in his name. NRSA 14 Do not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who are all around you, NIV 14 Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you;
