Exodus 12:1-14

CEB 1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, NRS 1 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: CEB 2 “This month will be the first month; it will be the first month of the year for you. NRS 2 This month shall mark for you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year for you. CEB 3 Tell the whole Israelite community: On the tenth day of this month they must take a lamb for each household, a lamb per house. NRS 3 Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household. CEB 4 If a household is too small for a lamb, it should share one with a neighbor nearby. You should divide the lamb in proportion to the number of people who will be eating it. NRS 4 If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one; the lamb shall be divided in proportion to the number of people who eat of it. CEB 5 Your lamb should be a flawless year-old male. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. NRS 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a year-old male; you may take it from the sheep or from the goats. CEB 6 You should keep close watch over it until the fourteenth day of this month. At twilight on that day, the whole assembled Israelite community should slaughter their lambs. NRS 6 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month; then the whole assembled congregation of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. CEB 7 They should take some of the blood and smear it on the two doorposts and on the beam over the door of the houses in which they are eating. NRS 7 They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it. CEB 8 That same night they should eat the meat roasted over the fire. They should eat it along with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. NRS 8 They shall eat the lamb that same night; they shall eat it roasted over the fire with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. CEB 9 Don't eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over fire with its head, legs, and internal organs. NRS 9 Do not eat any of it raw or boiled in water, but roasted over the fire, with its head, legs, and inner organs. CEB 10 Don't let any of it remain until morning, and burn any of it left over in the morning. NRS 10 You shall let none of it remain until the morning; anything that remains until the morning you shall burn. CEB 11 This is how you should eat it. You should be dressed, with your sandals on your feet and your walking stick in your hand. You should eat the meal in a hurry. It is the Passover of the LORD. NRS 11 This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it hurriedly. It is the passover of the Lord. CEB 12 I'll pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I'll strike down every oldest child in the land of Egypt, both humans and animals. I'll impose judgments on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. NRS 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and I will strike down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human beings and animals; on all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments: I am the Lord. CEB 13 The blood will be your sign on the houses where you live. Whenever I see the blood, I'll pass over you. No plague will destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. NRS 13 The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague shall destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. CEB 14 "This day will be a day of remembering for you. You will observe it as a festival to the LORD. You will observe it in every generation as a regulation for all time. NRS 14 This day shall be a day of remembrance for you. You shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a perpetual ordinance.
