1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart <em>and</em> go up from here, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt unto the land which I swore unto Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it.

2 (And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.)

3 Unto the land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou <em>art</em> a stiffnecked people lest I consume thee in the way.

4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned, and no one put on their ornaments.

5 For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the sons of Israel, Ye <em>are</em> a stiffnecked people; I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment and consume thee; therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee that I may know what to do unto thee.

6 Then the sons of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments from Mount Horeb <em>on</em>.

New International Version NIV

1 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’

2 I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

3 Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way.”

4 When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no one put on any ornaments.

5 For the LORD had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.’ ”

6 So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb.
