1 Justicia de un Dios justo<br />Luego recibí otro mensaje del Señor<br />:

2 «¿Por qué citan ustedes ese proverbio acerca de la tierra de Israel, que dice: “Los padres comieron uvas agrias, pero la boca de sus hijos se frunce por el sabor”?

3 Tan cierto como que yo vivo, dice el Señor<br /> Soberano, que dejarán de citar ese proverbio en Israel.

4 Pues todos los seres humanos son míos para juzgar, los padres y los hijos por igual. Esta es mi regla: la persona que peque es la que morirá.

5 »Supongamos que cierto hombre es recto y hace lo que es justo y correcto.

6 No participa en los banquetes que se ofrecen en los montes ante los ídolos de Israel<br /> ni les rinde culto. No comete adulterio ni tiene relaciones sexuales con una mujer durante su período menstrual.

7 Es un acreedor compasivo, no se queda con objetos entregados en garantía por deudores pobres. No les roba a los pobres, más bien, les da de comer a los hambrientos y les da ropa a los necesitados.

8 Presta dinero sin cobrar interés, se mantiene lejos de la injusticia, es honesto e imparcial al juzgar a otros

9 y obedece fielmente mis decretos y ordenanzas. Todo el que hace estas cosas es justo y ciertamente vivirá, dice el Señor<br /> Soberano.

10 »Pero supongamos que ese hombre tiene un hijo adulto que es ladrón o asesino y se niega a hacer lo correcto.

11 Ese hijo también comete todas las maldades que su padre jamás haría: rinde culto a ídolos en los montes, comete adulterio,

12 oprime a los pobres e indefensos, roba a los deudores al negarles que recuperen sus garantías, rinde culto a ídolos, comete pecados detestables

13 y presta dinero con intereses excesivos. ¿Acaso debería vivir ese pecador? ¡No! Tiene que morir y asumir toda la culpa.

14 »Pero supongamos que ese hijo pecador, a su vez, tiene un hijo que ve la maldad de su padre y decide no llevar esa clase de vida.

15 Este hijo se niega a rendir culto a ídolos en los montes y no comete adulterio.

16 No explota a los pobres, más bien, es justo con los deudores y no les roba. Da de comer a los hambrientos y da ropa a los necesitados.

17 Ayuda a los pobres,<br /> presta dinero sin cobrar interés y obedece todos mis decretos y ordenanzas. Esa persona no morirá por los pecados de su padre; ciertamente vivirá.

18 Sin embargo, el padre morirá por todos sus pecados: por haber sido cruel, por robar a la gente y hacer lo que es indudablemente incorrecto en medio de su pueblo.

19 »“¿Cómo? —se preguntan ustedes—. ¿No pagará el hijo por los pecados del padre?”. ¡No! Porque si el hijo hace lo que es justo y correcto y obedece mis decretos, ese hijo ciertamente vivirá.

20 La persona que peque es la que morirá. El hijo no será castigado por los pecados del padre ni el padre será castigado por los pecados del hijo. Los justos serán recompensados por su propia conducta recta y las personas perversas serán castigadas por su propia perversidad.

21 Ahora bien, si los perversos abandonan sus pecados y comienzan a obedecer mis decretos y a hacer lo que es justo y correcto, ciertamente vivirán y no morirán.

22 Todos los pecados pasados serán olvidados y vivirán por las acciones justas que han hecho.

23 »¿Acaso piensan que me agrada ver morir a los perversos?, pregunta el Señor<br /> Soberano. ¡Claro que no! Mi deseo es que se aparten de su conducta perversa y vivan.

24 Sin embargo, si los justos se apartan de su conducta recta y comienzan a pecar y a comportarse como los demás pecadores, ¿se les permitirá vivir? No, ¡claro que no! Todas las acciones justas que han hecho serán olvidadas y morirán por sus pecados.

25 »Sin embargo, ustedes dicen: “¡El Señor no hace lo correcto!”. Escúchame, pueblo de Israel. ¿Soy yo el que no hace lo correcto o son ustedes?

26 Cuando los justos abandonen su conducta justa y comiencen a cometer pecados, morirán por eso. Sí, morirán por sus acciones pecaminosas;

27 y si los perversos abandonan su perversidad, obedecen la ley y hacen lo que es justo y correcto, salvarán su vida.

28 Vivirán, porque lo pensaron bien y decidieron apartarse de sus pecados. Esas personas no morirán.

29 Aun así, los israelitas siguen diciendo: “¡El Señor no hace lo correcto!”. Oh pueblo de Israel, tú eres quien no hace lo correcto, no yo.

30 »Por lo tanto, pueblo de Israel, juzgaré a cada uno de ustedes, según sus acciones, dice el Señor<br /> Soberano. Arrepiéntete y apártate de tus pecados. ¡No permitas que tus pecados te destruyan!

31 Deja atrás tu rebelión y procura encontrar un corazón nuevo y un espíritu nuevo. ¿Por qué habrías de morir, oh pueblo de Israel?

32 No quiero que mueras, dice el Señor<br /> Soberano. ¡Cambia de rumbo y vive!

1 The word of the LORD came to me:

2 “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: “ ‘The parents eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge’?

3 “As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.

4 For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child—both alike belong to me. The one who sins is the one who will die.

5 “Suppose there is a righteous man who does what is just and right.

6 He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife or have sexual relations with a woman during her period.

7 He does not oppress anyone, but returns what he took in pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked.

8 He does not lend to them at interest or take a profit from them. He withholds his hand from doing wrong and judges fairly between two parties.

9 He follows my decrees and faithfully keeps my laws. That man is righteous; he will surely live, declares the Sovereign LORD.

10 “Suppose he has a violent son, who sheds blood or does any of these other things

11 (though the father has done none of them): “He eats at the mountain shrines. He defiles his neighbor’s wife.

12 He oppresses the poor and needy. He commits robbery. He does not return what he took in pledge. He looks to the idols. He does detestable things.

13 He lends at interest and takes a profit. Will such a man live? He will not! Because he has done all these detestable things, he is to be put to death; his blood will be on his own head.

14 “But suppose this son has a son who sees all the sins his father commits, and though he sees them, he does not do such things:

15 “He does not eat at the mountain shrines or look to the idols of Israel. He does not defile his neighbor’s wife.

16 He does not oppress anyone or require a pledge for a loan. He does not commit robbery but gives his food to the hungry and provides clothing for the naked.

17 He withholds his hand from mistreating the poor and takes no interest or profit from them. He keeps my laws and follows my decrees. He will not die for his father’s sin; he will surely live.

18 But his father will die for his own sin, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother and did what was wrong among his people.

19 “Yet you ask, ‘Why does the son not share the guilt of his father?’ Since the son has done what is just and right and has been careful to keep all my decrees, he will surely live.

20 The one who sins is the one who will die. The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.

21 “But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die.

22 None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live.

23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?

24 “But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die.

25 “Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

26 If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die.

27 But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life.

28 Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die.

29 Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

30 “Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.

31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel?

32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!
