Genesis 38:1-8

GNTA 1 About that time Judah left his brothers and went to stay with a man named Hirah, who was from the town of Adullam. NIV 1 At that time, Judah left his brothers and went down to stay with a man of Adullam named Hirah. GNTA 2 There Judah met a young Canaanite woman whose father was named Shua. He married her, NIV 2 There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and made love to her; GNTA 3 and she bore him a son, whom he named Er. NIV 3 she became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was named Er. GNTA 4 She became pregnant again and bore another son and named him Onan. NIV 4 She conceived again and gave birth to a son and named him Onan. GNTA 5 Again she had a son and named him Shelah. Judah was at Achzib when the boy was born. NIV 5 She gave birth to still another son and named him Shelah. It was at Kezib that she gave birth to him. GNTA 6 For his first son Er, Judah got a wife whose name was Tamar. NIV 6 Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. GNTA 7 Er's conduct was evil, and it displeased the Lord, so the Lord killed him. NIV 7 But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the LORD’s sight; so the LORD put him to death. GNTA 8 Then Judah said to Er's brother Onan, "Go and sleep with your brother's widow. Fulfill your obligation to her as her husband's brother, so that your brother may have descendants." NIV 8 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to raise up offspring for your brother.”
