John 12:27-50

CEB 27 "Now I am deeply troubled. What should I say? ‘Father, save me from this time'? No, for this is the reason I have come to this time. NIV 27 “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. CEB 28 Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." NIV 28 Father, glorify your name!”Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” CEB 29 The crowd standing there heard and said, "It's thunder." Others said, "An angel spoke to him." NIV 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. CEB 30 Jesus replied, "This voice wasn't for my benefit but for yours. NIV 30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. CEB 31 Now is the time for judgment of this world. Now this world's ruler will be thrown out. NIV 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. CEB 32 When I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to me." ( NIV 32 And I, when I am lifted upfrom the earth, will draw all people to myself.” CEB 33 He said this to show how he was going to die.) NIV 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die. CEB 34 The crowd responded, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ remains forever. How can you say that the Human One must be lifted up? Who is this Human One?" NIV 34 The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?” CEB 35 Jesus replied, "The light is with you for only a little while. Walk while you have the light so that darkness doesn't overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness don't know where they are going. NIV 35 Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. CEB 36 As long as you have the light, believe in the light so that you might become people whose lives are determined by the light." After Jesus said these things, he went away and hid from them. NIV 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them. CEB 37 Jesus had done many miraculous signs before the people, but they didn't believe in him. NIV 37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. CEB 38 This was to fulfill the word of the prophet Isaiah: Lord, who has believed through our message? To whom is the arm of the Lord fully revealed? NIV 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” CEB 39 Isaiah explains why they couldn't believe: NIV 39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: CEB 40 He made their eyes blind and closed their minds so that they might not see with their eyes, understand with their minds, and turn their lives around— and I would heal them. NIV 40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.” CEB 41 Isaiah said these things because he saw Jesus' glory; he spoke about Jesus. NIV 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him. CEB 42 Even so, many leaders believed in him, but they wouldn't acknowledge their faith because they feared that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue. NIV 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; CEB 43 They believed, but they loved human praise more than God's glory. NIV 43 for they loved human praise more than praise from God. CEB 44 Jesus shouted, "Whoever believes in me doesn't believe in me but in the one who sent me. NIV 44 Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. CEB 45 Whoever sees me sees the one who sent me. NIV 45 The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. CEB 46 I have come as a light into the world so that everyone who believes in me won't live in darkness. NIV 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. CEB 47 If people hear my words and don't keep them, I don't judge them. I didn't come to judge the world but to save it. NIV 47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world. CEB 48 Whoever rejects me and doesn't receive my words will be judged at the last day by the word I have spoken. NIV 48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them at the last day. CEB 49 I don't speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me regarding what I should speak and say. NIV 49 For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. CEB 50 I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore, whatever I say is just as the Father has said to me." NIV 50 I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”
