Matthew 16:13-18

RSV 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare'a Philip'pi, he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?" NIV 13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” RSV 14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli'jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." NIV 14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” RSV 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" NIV 15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” RSV 16 Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." NIV 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” RSV 17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. NIV 17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. RSV 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. NIV 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hadeswill not overcome it.
