Matthew 18:15-35

ESV 15 "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. MSG 15 "If a fellow believer hurts you, go and tell him - work it out between the two of you. If he listens, you've made a friend. ESV 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. MSG 16 If he won't listen, take one or two others along so that the presence of witnesses will keep things honest, and try again. ESV 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. MSG 17 If he still won't listen, tell the church. If he won't listen to the church, you'll have to start over from scratch, confront him with the need for repentance, and offer again God's forgiving love. ESV 18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. MSG 18 "Take this most seriously: A yes on earth is yes in heaven; a no on earth is no in heaven. What you say to one another is eternal. I mean this. ESV 19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. MSG 19 When two of you get together on anything at all on earth and make a prayer of it, my Father in heaven goes into action. ESV 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." MSG 20 And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I'll be there." ESV 21 Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" MSG 21 At that point Peter got up the nerve to ask, "Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven?" ESV 22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven. MSG 22 Jesus replied, "Seven! Hardly. Try seventy times seven. ESV 23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. MSG 23 "The kingdom of God is like a king who decided to square accounts with his servants. ESV 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. MSG 24 As he got under way, one servant was brought before him who had run up a debt of a hundred thousand dollars. ESV 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. MSG 25 He couldn't pay up, so the king ordered the man, along with his wife, children, and goods, to be auctioned off at the slave market. ESV 26 So the servantfell on his knees, imploring him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' MSG 26 "The poor wretch threw himself at the king's feet and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.' ESV 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. MSG 27 Touched by his plea, the king let him off, erasing the debt. ESV 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, 'Pay what you owe.' MSG 28 "The servant was no sooner out of the room when he came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him ten dollars. He seized him by the throat and demanded, 'Pay up. Now!' ESV 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' MSG 29 "The poor wretch threw himself down and begged, 'Give me a chance and I'll pay it all back.' ESV 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. MSG 30 But he wouldn't do it. He had him arrested and put in jail until the debt was paid. ESV 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. MSG 31 When the other servants saw this going on, they were outraged and brought a detailed report to the king. ESV 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. MSG 32 "The king summoned the man and said, 'You evil servant! I forgave your entire debt when you begged me for mercy. ESV 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' MSG 33 Shouldn't you be compelled to be merciful to your fellow servant who asked for mercy?' ESV 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers,until he should pay all his debt. MSG 34 The king was furious and put the screws to the man until he paid back his entire debt. ESV 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart." MSG 35 And that's exactly what my Father in heaven is going to do to each one of you who doesn't forgive unconditionally anyone who asks for mercy."
