Matthew 22:23-46

GNT 23 That same day some Sadducees came to Jesus and claimed that people will not rise from death. NIV 23 That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. GNT 24 "Teacher," they said, "Moses said that if a man who has no children dies, his brother must marry the widow so that they can have children who will be considered the dead man's children. NIV 24 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for him. GNT 25 Now, there were seven brothers who used to live here. The oldest got married and died without having children, so he left his widow to his brother. NIV 25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. GNT 26 The same thing happened to the second brother, to the third, and finally to all seven. NIV 26 The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. GNT 27 Last of all, the woman died. NIV 27 Finally, the woman died. GNT 28 Now, on the day when the dead rise to life, whose wife will she be? All of them had married her." NIV 28 Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?” GNT 29 Jesus answered them, "How wrong you are! It is because you don't know the Scriptures or God's power. NIV 29 Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. GNT 30 For when the dead rise to life, they will be like the angels in heaven and will not marry. NIV 30 At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. GNT 31 Now, as for the dead rising to life: haven't you ever read what God has told you? He said, NIV 31 But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, GNT 32 "I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' He is the God of the living, not of the dead." NIV 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead but of the living.” GNT 33 When the crowds heard this, they were amazed at his teaching. NIV 33 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching. GNT 34 When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they came together, NIV 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. GNT 35 and one of them, a teacher of the Law, tried to trap him with a question. NIV 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: GNT 36 "Teacher," he asked, "which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" NIV 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” GNT 37 Jesus answered, " "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' NIV 37 Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ GNT 38 This is the greatest and the most important commandment. NIV 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. GNT 39 The second most important commandment is like it: "Love your neighbor as you love yourself.' NIV 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ GNT 40 The whole Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments." NIV 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” GNT 41 When some Pharisees gathered together, Jesus asked them, NIV 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, GNT 42 "What do you think about the Messiah? Whose descendant is he?" "He is David's descendant," they answered. NIV 42 “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”“The son of David,” they replied. GNT 43 "Why, then," Jesus asked, "did the Spirit inspire David to call him "Lord'? David said, NIV 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, GNT 44 "The Lord said to my Lord: Sit here at my right side until I put your enemies under your feet.' NIV 44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord:“Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ’ GNT 45 If, then, David called him "Lord,' how can the Messiah be David's descendant?" NIV 45 If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” GNT 46 No one was able to give Jesus any answer, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. NIV 46 No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
