Nehemiah 5:2-13

ESV 2 For there were those who said, "With our sons and our daughters, we are many. So let us get grain, that we may eat and keep alive." NIV 2 Some were saying, “We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain.” ESV 3 There were also those who said, "We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses to get grain because of the famine." NIV 3 Others were saying, “We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine.” ESV 4 And there were those who said, "We have borrowed money for the king's tax on our fields and our vineyards. NIV 4 Still others were saying, “We have had to borrow money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards. ESV 5 Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children are as their children. Yet we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but it is not in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards." NIV 5 Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.” ESV 6 I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these words. NIV 6 When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry. ESV 7 I took counsel with myself, and I brought charges against the nobles and the officials. I said to them, "You are exacting interest, each from his brother." And I held a great assembly against them NIV 7 I pondered them in my mind and then accused the nobles and officials. I told them, “You are charging your own people interest!” So I called together a large meeting to deal with them ESV 8 and said to them, "We, as far as we are able, have bought back our Jewish brothers who have been sold to the nations, but you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us!" They were silent and could not find a word to say. NIV 8 and said: “As far as possible, we have bought back our fellow Jews who were sold to the Gentiles. Now you are selling your own people, only for them to be sold back to us!” They kept quiet, because they could find nothing to say. ESV 9 So I said, "The thing that you are doing is not good. Ought you not to walk in the fear of our God to prevent the taunts of the nations our enemies? NIV 9 So I continued, “What you are doing is not right. Shouldn’t you walk in the fear of our God to avoid the reproach of our Gentile enemies? ESV 10 Moreover, I and my brothers and my servants are lending them money and grain. Let us abandon this exacting of interest. NIV 10 I and my brothers and my men are also lending the people money and grain. But let us stop charging interest! ESV 11 Return to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive orchards, and their houses, and the percentage of money, grain, wine, and oil that you have been exacting from them." NIV 11 Give back to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves and houses, and also the interest you are charging them—one percent of the money, grain, new wine and olive oil.” ESV 12 Then they said, "We will restore these and require nothing from them. We will do as you say." And I called the priests and made them swear to do as they had promised. NIV 12 “We will give it back,” they said. “And we will not demand anything more from them. We will do as you say.” Then I summoned the priests and made the nobles and officials take an oath to do what they had promised. ESV 13 I also shook out the fold of my garment and said, "So may God shake out every man from his house and from his labor who does not keep this promise. So may he be shaken out and emptied."And all the assembly said "Amen" and praised the LORD. And the people did as they had promised. NIV 13 I also shook out the folds of my robe and said, “In this way may God shake out of their house and possessions anyone who does not keep this promise. So may such a person be shaken out and emptied!” At this the whole assembly said, “Amen,” and praised the LORD. And the people did as they had promised.
